Advantages/Disadvantages of Spoofing Drive??

Hello Everyone,

I have a friend who has a lite-on drive where the laser keeps getting stuck, so every 3 weeks to a month I have to unstick it for him. I have a spare BenQ lying around so I was thinking that it may just be easier to spoof the BenQ as a lite-on and replace the drive for him.

Now, I googled and found a lot of older information, but my main concern is detectability. Does spoofing the drive increase the risk of an XBL ban? I realize that most modded boxes aren't safe anymore, but I was just curious if this plays a role in detection. Would it be a better recommendation to just leave the drive as is if his main concern is playing on XBL?

i bought a used xbox 360 on ebay a while ago because my old one crapped out on me. the one i bought had a Hitachi in it and it read backups reallly slow. so i kept the drive from my old 360 which was a ben-q and spoofed it as a hitachi, put that in and it was much better, i played on live a fair amount and never got banned. so at least in my experience i never had any problems with it.

I don't think spoofing increases the chance of a ban. But there is a good chance of getting banned because it seems as if Microsoft has learned to detect iXtreme firmwares recently.
