I, at 13 years old, still remember DOS. I can even remember the command lines. Windows is so much easier.
Come to think of it i think i still have a copy of DOS 6.2 on some floppy disks.

I still use DOS commands on a daily basis, I create batch files regularly to use as login scripts etc.. DOS is great! I just wish that Linux/Unix were as simple.. I guess it will be the more I use it..
Just to let you all know, my first day as a Network Admin was fantastic! I haven't had such a stress free day in months!

Good evening to all.
It has taken me half an hour to trawl through this thread, and I tell you it is an amazing read considering what the initial subject was.
(Should be an international reward available somewhere or guiness book of records)
Hi I,m in the UK and 28 for now (until another year.. sweeps past my eyes, any ideas how to stop this - re-encode or rip?
My dad is getting into MPEG4 big time, he's been to countless seminars and reckons this thing is going to take off in a big way as he says the compressability is amazing and I would just like to hear of anyone elses views (and also to change the topic again)
...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............
Beware of the Pixies - they move in over night and turn your life upside down

MPEG4 has been around for a while, more commonly known as DivX. There are a few DVD players which now support DivX 4 or later, so who knows, maybe the industry will start accepting the fact that DivX is not going away and start producing movies with MPEG4 compression on DVD.
If you guys think I make tons of money, then I have news for you! I still haven't got the raise I deserve yet, so I may be looking for work soon because I'm sick of working my ass off for peanuts!
Oh, and my job is still stressful, only slightly less..

awwwwww poor vcd!!! maybe afterdawn should start paying you for your moderator service eh?? :P
DivX kicks ass!!! I would like to see more vcd/svcd releases of movies though. I know there are always releases of them but thats movies that are just fresh in the cinema wheras the good old classic films always come in divx/xvid format which means you have to re-encode all the time. And that sucks. So I wouldn't mind a divx compatible standalone I can tell you that!!

I bet that in a few years time most DVD players will support DivX.

major manufacturers are going to be under lots of pressure from the film industry to NOT produce DivX compatible players, so for the time being expect to only see rinky-dink no-name brand DivX DVD players.. Not to mention the fact that they may be afraid of being sued by the film industry! unfortunately, they have good lawyers and lots of money and tend to like suing people for stupid reasons!

On the box they could just say:
-Supports DivX (Allows you to play family videos in the DivX format)
and not get sued.

DivX would be good to have for a DVD player, but even better would be a DVD player that allows you to install your own codecs! Then, you could do DivX 3,4,5, XviD, etc.. Now that would be cool!
I would just like to say that I am officially on vacation this week, and will be out of town for a few days.. guys, have fun and don't do anything I would do!
I'll smoke a big fatty for you all..

That's probably the best idea for DVD player manufacturers. Imagine that, it would be completely foreward compatible. You could even create your own codec.
