Yes. I have a brand new Wii that I purchased 3 days before Christmas and ignorantly updated the firmware to 4.2U. After several hours of reading up on the internet and paying $34 to BreWii amongst reading a lot of other stuff, I was successfully able to finally boot games off of an external HD. The HD is a Western Digital 500GB Studio Edition. I can't really with confidence tell you how I did it, it was just a lot of intuition and I suppose risk taking also as I risked "bricking" my Wii. But everything is working fine and I just got back from Hastings and rented a couple of games and copied them and they seem to work just fine. I'll try to keep you posted as to any future problems.

Let me also add that I do NOT have any hardware MOD chips. All I used was an SD card an a lot of going back and forth from my computer to the Wii with it. I don't really gave yet a full understanding of what an IOS is or for that matter a WAD or a forwarding WAD or all that lingo. Ironically, there is so much info out there right now on the internet trying to make it easy for people to do just as I did, but everything is spoon-fed to people in such a manner that doesn't explain the terminology at the same time. If maybe perhaps someone would put up a tutorial but at the same time explaining what in the hell a NAND, WAD, IOS, *.boot, *.elf, bricking, and any other term I might have left out, then the person trying to hack their Wii could learn something in the process instead of "blindly" going about it, just following instructions. Information is too "scattered" right now so that people are asking all these questions and having problems, but explaining such terms concerning the software and hardware components of the Wii would possibly alleviate potential problems. Thanks!

Bootmii works like this: The power button moves the cursor, and the reset button selects and activates your choice. About the 2011 error, all you had to do was to "Google" it but I did it for you and came up with the following solution. This seems to have worked for others. The link is http://gbatemp.net/index.php?s=572be6275...howtopic=112945 You're welcome. Hope this works for you.

Thank you for the reply and the help.Unfortunately the link you gave me confused me more.I took your advice though and Googled the issue. I didn't find a fix for my problem but I did find a more up to date way to play my backups. This guy set up everything for you in one shot. Its great for newbie idiots like me that want it handed to them on a platter.Anyone just starting out should get the files from here:http://www.mediafire.com/?4lmljmmozay and go here:http://adewii.wordpress.com/2009/10/17/howto-prepare-a-system-menu-4-2-wii-for-launching-backups-from-blank-dvd-or-usb-drive for the tutorial. It's "easy peasy lemon squeazy". I should mention that this is for 4.2u systems. Don't worry about the downgrade its almost flawless.
