Hello I'm new to the whole Wii scene, I just got one for christmas and I wanna add it to my modded list. I was wondering what's the chances of bricking a Wii on a first time softmod?
I also wanna how hard is it? keep this in mind when replying I have modded my xbox 360 and several friends. I have also modded my PSP, I also go back to the fat ps2 with fliptop and swap magic days.
This is my last question also what's the best blank media for burning Wii games?

Here is the guide
You can decide for yourself how hard it looks, but I can say from experience that it is a fairly simple process.
And verbatum DVD-R are generally considered one of the more reliable media for wii games.

If you follow the guide above to the letter you shouldn't run into problems.
You should also think about using a USB Loader instead of burning games. A USB Loader will give you faster load times. Plus you don't have to go through the steps of burning the backups and hoping that they have burned properly. Keep in mind if you have 1 of the newer drives then you will not be able to use backup disc at all. You will need to use a USB loader.
The 4.2 guide is also linked in my sig along with a USB Loader guide if your interested in that.

So are you, in essence, saying the only way to play backups on a newly purchased, soft-modded Wii is probably from a usb flash drive or external hard drive?
I was planning on buying one and soft-modding it, too. I was hoping I could use bannerbomb and go from there. Back to the drawing board?

Some new wii's cannot play burned games, but not all. I just finished softmodding a brand new wii that a coworker got for christmas and it plays burned games fine.
Even if you do get one of the ones that cant play burned disks though, it is by no means 'back to the drawing board.' Playing from a USB drive is just a few extra steps after completing the softmod guide. There is a link to the USB loader guide in the 4.2 softmod guide.

Thanks for that info. I'm not so keen on the usb stuff because it means I'll have to buy an external hard drive. I'm sure it will pay for itself in the long-run, though.

Smaller games (like NSMB) can actually be played directly from the SD card if that helps any.

Is bricking a real danger? I heard as long as you don't update the firmware or patch your games, you're okay.
I heard that bootmii can restore your wii in a bricked scenario. But then I read that newer wii's won't let you install bootmii on boot2, only as an "IOS" I think. I think they were saying was that in that situation, you wouldn't have that safety net if your wii bricked.

Bricking is rare if you follow softmod directions carefully, and bricking from a game update is far rarer. Softmods and USB loaders will automatically block updates from game disks as well, so you don't have to worry about that either.
You're right about bootmii too. If you have a newer wii that cant install it as boot2 then you cant restore the NAND from a full brick. It can only backup the NAND and restore from minor problems.
