My ps3 fat (with a 500GB upgraded drive) just died. (dreaded disc drive error). I am getting a ps3 slim. Can I pop my 500GB drive from my ps3 fat into the slim?

Yes. I think that i read that the New PS3 will require you to format it even thow it came from a PS3. So back up your data.

Question within a question. I plan on getting a new HD, possibly the Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD3200BEVT 320GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA. Do i have to format the HD to Fat32 before putting it into the PS3 or will the PS3 format it for me?

The PS3 forces you to format it and there is no way round that.
