Question about modding LU72 Wii

I have been reading many forums about modding the Wii. I have a wii I got for xmas last year that I modded using the Zelda hack. My brother in law got a new LU72 Wii for xmas this year and I am a little hesitant on messing with it. i am not sure if it is a 4.1 or 4.2.
I have read in some places that a LU72 can not read DVD-r discs. Can anyone confirm this?

I want to mod it in order to play back up isos. can this been done on this version of Wii. Is my only option to use a usb loader?

Thank you for any help as i am a little confused and would like to get some answers from people who have tried it themselves

If it has 1 of the new drives then yes it will only be able to use a USB Loader.

If you want to know 100% sure if you have 1 of the drives then you will probably need to open up the system.

Other words just follow the softmod guide and at the end if you have issues playing backup disc then try using a USB Loader. if the USB Loader works then more then likely you have a newer drive.

I recommend following the 4.2 softmod guide in my sig if you want to softmod it.

Hi, I'm in the same boat as you and trying to Softmod my brand new wii Serial LU725XXXXX. I think your ok to update it to 4.2, I did and am following Larry's great 4.2 guide now. Some of the new games only work if your wii is updated anyway.

I've got the HBC (HomeBrew channel) and Bootmii installed and going to pick up a Gamecube controller from a friend so I can do the next part and Backup my NAND. I'll let you know how I make out.

I picked up an external Hard Drive so I can do the USB loader option because I would assume for sure my wii has the new DVDrom drive in it that can't play backup disks.
