Did you use the proper resolution/bitrate? If any is higher than what your player will support, it will not work. What exactly is the eroor that you get?

Here are some other free programs that will encode to H.264:

It says in the techspecs that it supports 480*272 resolution.
Try encoding your files to this spec.

Drag the file into mediainfo and look at view/text for the details.
See how it compares to the capabilities of the device.

I understand what you're saying, re: the info you posted. However,
the native screen is apparently 480*272 and all programs played will
only be displayed at that res. (by encoding it specially for the Zune,
as I did for my son's Creative Zen, it saves a lot of space in the
device.)

If you can't see anything that explains it in Mediainfo, I would find
a Zune-specific discussion group. You're more likely to find someone
who's been there, done that.

Instead of Handbrake, try this software(free):

http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

You can try and convert just the audio if you like, and see if the audio is the problem, or the entire original file to a new mp4. Choose AAC_Low for audio codec;or, just convert it to a WMV:

According to the techspecs, up to level 3.1 is supported.
In the mediainfo readout, the video is encoded at high, level 4.1.
Perhaps this is the issue.
