!!! MPEG-2 file problem !!!

Trying to play an MPEG-2 movie file and I've run into nothing but trouble. The folder used to lock up whenever I tried to launch the file, so I copied what I needed and reformatted. After that, I installed Windows Media Player 9 and DivX 5 Pro along with the Nimo codecs. The file still refuses to play.

This file runs perfectly fine on my friend's computer. I copied it over to his and it looks superb. I'm at my wits end. Will somebody please help me!?!

you're runnig windows server ? and you run nimo codec pack ?
whatever, but the last time i heard, nimo is evil with conflicting codecs. and what everyone always say, happy reformating.

the easiest solution is try using dvd player software. ie powerdvd, windvd or whatever.

Try using a program called GSpot . It should help you find out what codec was used to make the mpeg video your trying to watch. You can also download a codec pack.. Just a zip file with the most popular codecs used. Install them and try to watch it again

Motomatt: Mpeg Files are Not made From Codecs...Mpeg2 is a Format unto it"s Self so all GSpot will say is that it is a Mpeg2 file....

You should just use DVD playing software because Media Player does not natively Support Mpeg2 Playback and when you have a Mpeg2 decoder fpr media Player installed it will Ignore the Aspect ratio Flags in the File so it will not look right anyways...

MPEG (pronounced M-peg), which stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, is the nickname given to a family of International Standards used for coding audio-visual information in a digital compressed format. The MPEG family of standard "codecs" includes MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, formally known as ISO/IEC-11172, ISO/IEC-13818 and ISO/IEC-14496.

Codec
1. Short for compressor/decompressor, a codec is any technology for compressing and decompressing data. Codecs can be implemented in software, hardware, or a combination of both. Some popular codecs for computer video include MPEG,MPEG1,MPEG2,MPEG4 Indeo and Cinepak. 2. In telecommunications, (short for coder/decoder) a device that encodes or decodes a signal. For example, telephone companies use codecs to convert binary signals transmitted on their digital networks to analog signals converted on their analog networks. 3. The translation of a binary value into a voltage that can be transmitted over a wire.

Furthermore,The user must also have the codec installed that the MPEG file was encoded with. A codec is the specific software algorithm used for compressing and decompressing the video file. There are many different types of codecs that an MPEG file can be encoded with. So if he doesn't have the correct one.. It won't play..

Nice Copy and Paste there But Most of this Does not Apply with the Mpeg format...
You can Not create a Mpeg1/2 Files with a "Codec"..
In the Mpeg format Encoders and Decoders are 2 totally seperate things...
You name me One Mpeg "Codec" that Encodes and Decodes?????
You can"t because it doesn"t exist....
Take for instance "DivX" it is a codec, You can install it and then you can create DiVX files and watch DivX files...
You can Not Install a Mpeg "Codec" and create Mpeg files, you need a seperate Decoder to watch Mpeg files and a seperate Encoder to create them...
This is all First year Broadcasting shcool(Actually Closer to the First week of Broadcasting school)...
So you can Not apply what you know about AVI codecs and the Mpeg format, they are Apples and Oranges....

Awww dont get bent out of shape...Just cause I posted some facts from the MPEG home page and proved you wrong. What part doesn't apply to MPEG?

1. The link to the "codec" that allows you to create MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VCD, SVCD (ISO/IEC 13818, 11172), DVD, KVCD (non-standard), CVD. What do you mean I can't install a mpeg codec and make mpeg1/2 video's? http://www.motiwala.com/ympeg.htm Isn't mpeg1 just a VCD? Thats not so hard..

2. Who said anything about a MPEG encoder/decoder NOT being two seperate things? Aren't they all? duh..

3. A realtime MPEG encoder/decoder does exist only not in a software "codec". It's hardware and also available to the public.

4.Decoder = DVD player.... Software or hardware, which ever "decoder" you prefer to use to watch MPEG files. Most of them play all the MPEG formats.. My new one even does Mpeg4.

5. Who said anything about comparing AVI to MPEG?

6.Whether you like it or not, MPEG is a "codec" which was our original argument.

There is No Mpeg Codecs because the Word "Codec" Means it "Encodes" and "Decodes" and there is Not One Mpeg Codec that Both Encodes and Decodes the Mpeg Format so the Word "Codec" does not apply to the Mpeg format, You either have to have a Encoder or a Decoder the 2 are not interchangeable in the Mpeg format...
Yes and Ympeg is an Encoder(Not a Codec) it can not decode the Mpeg format so calling it and Codec isn"t really true...
A codec has to do 2 Things for it to Truely be a Codec,It has to encode and Decode and if it can not do Both then it is Not a Codec...
I didn"t go to Broadcasting school for 3 years for nothing ...
