I want to buy myself a somewhat bigger tv. I currently have a 52cm (very old) flatscreen CRT. Im thinking about going for an lcd, the biggest I can afford is a 32".
My question is whether I should go for an hd ready (720p) or full hd (1080p) or should I just go for a bigger crt? The hd ready is almost a grand of my currency (About 1 pound for 13 rands) cheaper than the full hd and Im not sure what an equal sized CRT would cost but I know its a lot cheaper. How big is the quality difference between these screens with the xbox. I almost only use the xbox on my tv but now and then I would watch a movie from my laptop

Due to the reccession the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off until further notice

IMHO, 720 is the same as 1080. and i know someone will come in here and say is not (technically speaking, it isnt the same), but my eyes dont notice a difference. so i would just go to an electronics store and look at the difference yourself.

Come talk with us on efnet at #elitemods !!! or just click ME

ALSO, DO NOT SEND ME MESSAGES ON LIVE REGARDING MODDING CONSOLES, OR HOW I PLAYED A CERTAIN GAME EARLY. I WILL NOT RESPOND. I WILL INSTEAD DELETE YOUR MESSAGE, AND BLOCK ALL COMMUNICATION FROM YOU. JUST SEND ME A PM ON HERE.

At 32", I agree with wabashman. You would be just fine with the 720.

What you may want to research is lag and ghosting if you're going to a lcd. I don't think there's a problem with the new lcd's, but it's still something you may want to take a few minutes and look in to.

It would probably depend on which brand and model lcd you go with.

I'd also like to mention that I actually prefer fps's on my 24" lcd pc monitor vs. my 52" plasma. And I'm not alone. Alot of people find having too big of a screen a distraction. Your reaction time is slightly increased because you're having to move both your eyes and head.

It all just depends on what type of gaming you like. On LIVE, 98% of my gaming is shooters and I strictly use my pc monitor. But if I'm just doing some casual, slower paced gaming, I'll play on my 52".

"Santa" just brought my son a 32" Samsung with amazing specs (but not 1080p) and it cost...wait for it...$379!!! Absolutely amazing! Got a Magnovox blu-ray player at wal-mart for $78 and watched our first blu-ray on it last night. It was awesome! I cant imagine 1080p looking any better that 720p. :-)
edit: The tv is now $449, still on sale but not as much as before. Here is the link:

It's not until you get in to the larger screen sizes. Then you'll see the difference between 1080 and 720.

As a senior technician I can tell you that the differences between 1080p and 720p should be the least of your concerns. In the computer world, the resolution is self is much more important since you are sitting about 2 feet from the monitor.

The resolution is always something important but there are other criterias that make a tv hd panel worth buying.

1. quality of the image (don't confuse this with resolution please)
2. size of the tv
3. price
4. resolution.

Is there a visual difference in a television set between 720p and 1080p? There is but at a certain distance.

Best thing you can do is go to sears and compare 720p sets vs 1080p sets from difference distances and this will educate you better in your purchase decision.

Even at 50 inches, I have not seen much of a difference from at least 6 feet away.

Well that's because the farther away you are the less likely you are to notice, so being at least 6 feet or farther away, you're less likely to notice.

that and you have to consider all the other specs of the set.

It also depends on the input resolution. If you have a tv that is 1080p native resolution and a tv with 720p native resolution with a 720p input on both, the 720p tv is going to look better than the 1080p one as the 1080p will have to upscale the resolution (that's what I was told by experts when I was buying my first projector, if it is wrong, blame them :P). So considering all xbox 360 games are native 720p you are better off getting the 720p tv.

The best way to determine which one is right for you (as mentioned above) is to go to a store and compare them side by side. There is a lot of variables (viewing distance, angle, lighting etc).

Try a 112" projector screen, I have had an infocus x9 (720p) and an x10 (1080p), the x10 blows the x9 away. Sadly I didn't have the right conditions for a home theatre in my new home (the lounge rooms are way too bright) so now I am forced to play xbox on a 10 year old 22" SD tv... lol (i'm planning to make one of the dining rooms into a home theatre).

Below 32" 720 1080 doesn't matter, at that size only god can tell the difference.

Big is good but too big is shite, I actually hate the massive eff-off movie screens at my local cinema. Your preference.

CRT - No. LCD. LED if you can :) This is subject to opinion though, that ^^ is mine.

Yes, *watch* the TV at the store. They can specify a bunch of crap but you can still get home and have a terrible 'viewing angle' and/or look unwatchable in semi to bright light.

Check all the inputs/outputs as well to make sure it suits your needs.

Buy quality sh*t. This is once again an opinion, but personally I just don't like risking buying a POS.

I do agree with all that is said above but what you have also got to take in to account is the quality of your own eyes...... it's no good buying a top spec 1080P to run your 360/blu-ray through if your eye sight is shot to pieces, also look into how far away from the screen you should sit to get optimum benefit (there is a rough guide somewhere on the net). Also the bigger the screen the further away you should be as peripheral vision degrades as it tries to cope with capturing the outer most portions of the LCD/Plasma panel.

This will cause extra eyestrain and headaches lol (check me the whinging parent) :)

if you're a little strapped for cash and going to be viewing it mostly yourself... check out rear projection tvs. much cheaper and much larger for the buck.

the viewing angles are going to suck compared to a flat screen tv but if you are the one watching/playing it 99% of the time i assume you'll be sitting directly in front of it where the picture will be great.

but if you're going to have multiple people over alot of the time sitting all over the room the go with a flatscreen.

either direction you go... pick out a few tv's in your price range and go to the store and watch them over and over and over. let your eyes decide.

Ignore this...comment...

At 32" you won't notice a difference between "1080p" and 720p unless you are like 3 inches away from the screen.

Vizio VOJ320F 32" LCD TV will only cost you at about $475. It's 1080p and has an impressive LCD TV ratings of 90. Definitely, a best bang for the buck.

With a projector then you're opening a whole can of worms right there lol. Kinda hard to imagine playing a game one that sucker.
