Haven't fooled around with hacking my consoles since the original Xbox so i'm out of practice. I ordered a DriveKey Wii for my Wii (currently running Ver 3.4u) and a compatible LG drive as listed in one of the tutorial threads on this site.

My question is the tutorials are dated. 2 years almost on one of them. Have things changed recently or are these still valid. Seems like I may have wasted money on the ModChip as it looks like it can be done completely for free. (I also have the WiiKey Fusion on order :( )

It's really confusing because I can't see what the mod chip even does that Softmodding or Homebrew don't. Does it just include all the software so you don't have to really load anything? Researching this has been hard because there is SOOOOO much information on that is almost becomes overwhelming.

My ModChip hasn't even arrived yet but I'm tempted to try this method but again it's dated September 13th, 2008. Seems like things may have changed quite a bit since then.

If it helps here a link to the two chips I ordered.

this one I had to pre-order but it sounds better because I think it rips directly to the SD slot.

Looks like I may need some other piece of hardware to use the SD card but I'm still researching that.

Thanks!

As far as I know the guides are still good. I havent used them in a very long time though.

And you're right that there's nothing a modchip can do that homebrew cant do cheaper and better. For example: If you play a backup game that includes large video files on your wii with a drivekey (for example, mario galaxy or smash bros) you will get stuttering video because the drive speed is limited to 3x. If you use a usb loader (which will play backups from a usb drive or the SD card without any extra hardware) then it operates much faster than reading from even an official game disk and you will have no stuttering and quicker load times.
