My son's friend just got a new Xbox 360 for Christmas and gave us his old one. It has the RROD with 3 lights. Heres what I know: it had a RROD before and he sent it in to Microsoft for repair. Now it's doing it again. I've seen the tutorials but I'm wondering if having the RROD will cause it to not have any video or sound. I just want to make sure before I fix it. Also, the tutorial I found doesn't mention re-using the X braces. Is this correct? Also, is the reason to use bolts instead to be able to provide more and constant pressure? The heat sink does have the extended arm with another radiator on it, I hear that's the good one. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

The tutorial I found has you overheat the chip to reflow the solder. Is that what you're talking about? I was looking for verification that if you have RROD that the video and audio don't work.

Not trying to be funny but if you have rrod you will have...3 red lights around the power button. ;-)

I've had some 360s that didn't have video or audio with RROD. I've also had some that did show an E74 message (video).

When I got RROD I did that x-clamp fix where the heat sinks are bolted and then fan disconnected to get the xbox to overeat so it re solders something somewhere. I since know there are better ways of fixing this but it has worked for me and it's still going strong after 8 months.

Thanks for the help. It does have the three res lights around the power button but it also does not have any video or audio so I just wanted to make sure that there were not two issues going on.

ErOR, what are the better ways that you now know about? I would appreciate having all of the information that I could have. I've done alot of searching but so far the Llama tutorial seems like my best bet.

Yeah, I was going to suggest that. Next to a reflow, the Llamma tutorial is probably the best and has worked for me.

What is the most reliable fix for the E74 error? The X-Clamp kit fix?

I had one "professionally" done and it lasted for 2 weeks. Did an x-clamp fix myself after that and it has been going for 2 months.

I just received a kit in the mail yesterday. Did you use both types of washers? I've seen people only use the nylon. I would think those alone are more likely to melt or get too hot. ???

Success! I followed the tutorial on the Llamma site and it worked before I even reflowed the solder. I'm overheating the GPU anyway to make sure. That sure is an easy fix. Now I need a controller, maybe a hard drive, oh and a game would be nice!

I would say the best fix for a 360 is a re-flow with the hybrid fix along with the fan shroud mod. I have done this on a 360 that was used since launch and it is going steady.
