Sony won't push 'Moon' for Oscars, cites anti-piracy measures

article published on 6 January, 2010

In what is frankly a head-scratching display of skewed reasoning, Sony has said today that it will not promote the sleeper hit Moon (starring Sam Rockwell) for an Oscar award because the movie does not come out on DVD in the U.S. until later this month and the company does not want to have screeners leaked to the Internet. Last week, director Duncan Jones tweeted his displeasure at Sony's ... [ read the full article ]

already seen a screener.. the r5 has been out for a while.. if you know where to look.. it's a yawnfest.

so the mpaa scumbags now try to dictate which films will and won't get nominated for industry/guild awards.. another nail. bang!

yeah.. if they want to stop the "leaks" they better stop all the newspaper and tv film reviewers getting screeners a fortnight before the premiere hadn't they.. this one came from the "usual sources"

or would that harm their cinema takings as the reviewers have nothing to write and no nice freebies so they write rave reviews of junk?

I was being cagey earlier.. google doesn't have such scruples XD

The thing about Moon is that its particular genre is very predisposed toward being uploaded onto the Web.
So, all you sci-fi nerds are to blame for this rampant piracy

the awards ceremonies like MTV, Oscars, Academy Awards are all fixed by the media companies telling each other how great they are.

to be nominated for an oscar you have to get play time in a list of specific cinemas, so if you are an independent film maker fighting for air time as the MPAA dictate to cinemas what to promote you are up the proverbial creek.

Which Sam, the first one or the second one, or maybe the third; though obviously all three.

Makes me remember The Dead Kennedys at the music awards one year... they told 'em exactly where the mainstream artists stand.. I have audio only of the live broadcast.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pull_My_Strings

gogle it.. should be on g00btube or somewhere.

Now THAT is how to do it... not like these reality tv garbage and "in every bloody thing" actors we have these days.

I watched High Society over xmas.. what a cracking 50's musical.. recommended. .. far better than the last 10 years hollywood garbage.

Wouldn't a shiny "Oscar Winner For..." or "Oscar Nominee For..." label on the case sell more DVDs in the long term? WTF Sony? Not sure about their logic.

Well said Oscars don't mean sh*t anymore. This was proven when the Oscar for best supporting actor went to Sean Penn instead of a post-humous Oscar to Heath Ledger.

Why???? I don't buy DVD's just because they have Oscars on them? I buy them because I like the film. Of the 100 odd DVD's I own, the only time I have ever bought a DVD without seeing the film was The Green Mile, fortunate that turned out quite well for me. I would never purchase a DVD just because it's won awards or been critically acclaimed, neither does anyone else I know.

But alot of people do. Or at least blow money on rentals.

And Green Mile? Hmm... must've been an early adopter like me, because that was the first DVD I ever purchased. (Without seeing it too; weird!)
