Just though I would post with my recent RROD & E74 fixes.

Basically, I had a 8 xbox's which I could not fix for love nor money. I'm in the UK so couldn't get the guys on here to do me reflows and I cant afford to spend a few hundred quid on a reflow kit, so I though what the hell I'll give the heat gun method a go.

Im not on box 4 and everyone so far has been fixed, i did accidently melt the eject button on the last one (luckily it has the new dash with the eject function), its better than RROD though.

The way I did it was cover the Capacitors and ports and then heated each side for 4 mins each, then bolted heatsinks directly on to the motherboard. So far I have 2 than can potentially be Jtagged (YEY!).

Now I know the heat gun method has mixed reviews, but it has worked for me so far. Its not a substitute for a proper reflow but its the best I can do here in snowy UK ATM. If someone on here in the UK did reflows, that would be my first choice as that is the only permanent fix for these issues.

Mike

I have also had a lot of success with the heat gun method and the Llama x-clamp fix method. Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents as every RROD box I've had has comeback to life.

hi miketrev

i too have a couple of persistent 360's that will not toe the line and have just ordered a heat gun and some liquid flux off of fleabay. I'd be interested to know how you insulated the capacitors etc? i've watched a couple of youtube vids and it seems to vary between people. i was thinking of a damp tea towel wrapped in a plastic bag and then moulded around the board and covered in foil. Overkill do you think?????

i have a spare e74 that will not fix and has a duff dvd drive too and will be my test piece :) it was given to me for free so won't be a big loss if i pop a cap or too lol

oh and what temp does your heat gun push out? the one on order has variable output up to 600 oC

Im not sure what temps it gives, it only has 2 setting. ill have to check when i get home (At work ATM). In regards to coving the board, I just used foil. I am going to use 2 layers from now on (if I dont for some reason organise a reflow) after the eject button issue. Just make sure you constantly move the heatgun up & down, then side to side. Put extra effort in to the GPU, CPU, & your chips in a circular motion. Make sure you slowly heat up the board and when finish slowly cool to make sure you dont crack your mobo. Try not to put too much heat on the foil and you should be good to go.

If you do manage to get your test xbox working, if its a oldish dash you might be able to get your DVD key back using the JTAG hack.

Good luck

Personally I dont do any insulation when heatgunning. Tin foil provides a false sense of security since it conducts heat very well. Other methods I've tried for insulation just make a mess. I've been quite successful simply directing the heat away from the caps (while still hitting the CPU). Havent blown a single one yet. When I'm over the RAM on top, southbridge and HANA I just keep the heatgun angled slightly toward the GPU

hey guy's i have just gone up from heatgun method as it died so i decided to invest in some kit to do a proper reflow i,e infared pre heater and proper heat air gun aoyue 968 just need to work out my profiles then ill be up and running. I have a few boards here that should be j-tag able as i will also need to recover the dvd drive keys off them.
using a heat gun worked about 75% of the time for me so its always worth a try to be honest

I actually found a really good way of insulating the important bits although i dont bother anymore either. I used the top part of a 360 case. You know inside the top part there's that metal sheet, Well i took that and cut a good shape around all the bits i wanted to heat gun in the future. I also cut and bent little metal lips downwards so they would go straight down to the board and shield everything else. I then layered the top with a combination of heat resistant foam and thick tin foil. I held it in place by screws going thought the holes in the motherboard and washers on the other side hold them. It worked a treat :)

Just my two cents in case anyone cab benefit but im a pro with a heat gun now lol. The trick is to know your heat gun well and where to focus on the motherboard. The preheat and cool down processes are also vital!!

Thats a very idea Anyboby, I melted another sync button last night so Imm gonna make a metal template like yours.

I use my low setting and start a few feet away from the board, I will slowly get closer to the board and eventually turn to the higher heat setting.

When cooling, I turned down to the lower settings and gradually move the heatgun away.

Cool Miketrev :)

my gun is the same spec sounds like, and would be very interested in the shield you are knocking up. I have a 2rrod which is instantaneous on boot ( 2-3 seconds ) and the fan kicks in at max rev, reports on here say to heat the ram chips only so i may give that a go tonight.

I did try a full chipset meltdown on my knackered 360 with foil around the sensitive areas just to see how long a stint i could do before smoke out occurred lol it was @ 3.5 mins at max chat ( 600 oC ) with some preheat of course lol i think it was only some paint from the wiggly important things on the mobo though lol
