There is a local guy that is selling a 60GB PS3 for $90cdn including everything, just no games. The issue with it is that it will play any type of media including blu-ray movies except it will not play games. It has never been opened up, seal is intact, and he claims its just a firmware issue.
Is this an easy fix? Or should I steer clear? I am fine opening them up I have reflowed a few, done some clamp bends and repaired a couple of 360's. But I have no experience with blu-ray drives.
The Blu Laser that reads BluRay movies is the same one that reads games. The 60 has a second Red laser that reads DVD's and PS1 & PS2 games. If it is actually a firmware issue, you can go to playstation.com and DL the latest firmware to a usb flash drive and install it to his PS3 to see if it is a firmware issue. If it will Play a BluRay movie then it should play a PS3 game.

Its going to be a roll of the dice on my part. I am going to bring a Blu-Ray movie to confirm it reads movies and then I guess wing it.
But yeah I was thinking the same thing, if it reads movies heck it should read games, so hopefully its an easy fix.
Even if it can't read movies (wich is most certainly the case), $90 is still a good price. Remember that the phat model is no longer being manufactured - and the newer (slim) can't read ps2 or ps1 games or get Linux in it. +, the PS3 is actually a nice media center (not the best, but very nice).
If you're not afraid to open it or have some friend with experience in such things (it's a very easy procedure by the way - for those familiar with electronics - it's not that hard) you might have a nice surprise and realise it just needed a lens cleansing for example (happens more than people really know). If not, you might have to buy a new laser and still get a PS3 under $150 (in Europe you can get a spare laser for 70?, I imagine in US is similar(?))
Heck, you should bring along a PS2 game, too, just to make sure it actually IS a 60GB PS3 and not just one that's had a case replaced or a hard drive put in or what have you.
