I've been reading that a lot of people have had success with new consoles but updating first then flashing. My brother and his friend have not used their xbox since the ban wave started and have not played any wave 4 games. Has anyone flashed back to stock updated then reflashed and been ok?

If there consoles have been flagged for playing backups then it will not matter if you flash back to stock to update then reflash, they will still get banned. As far as people with new consoles updating then flashes, yes I think most of them are still not banned. People that bought a new console, flashed it then updated have been banned. No one is sure how MS is detecting modded console so there is not a 100% answer. If there consoles have not been flagged then it might work, but it might not. There is no way of telling if your console is flagged or not, just going to have to take a chance I guess.
