anyone know why my xbox 360 would be freezing up on all games? i can load them up and start playing them for a few minutes then they just freeze up . it never says unreadable disc which leads me to believe that the drive isn't bad
any help or ideas would be great thanks

Yeah I fixed my red ring over Christmas break, and brought my xbox to school. It was working fine for awhile, but all the sudden it just started freezing up. I took it apart again to see if I could figure out what the problem was, but I have no idea.

I've had it freeze during dashboard too, and when it does freeze it puts a blue checkerboard layer over top of the dashboard.

If anyone knows what might be causing it, give us a shout.

Probably broken solder somewhere. I know 1 through 4 rings can all be caused by broken solder (as well as green lights but no video). I've had two systems that were doing all this freezing stuff then later ended up getting the 3 red. If you've already done the x-clamp fix try doing the chassis modifications like drilling holes so the screws fit properly as well as sanding the standoffs so the motherboard sits evenly. If that fails it's reflow time...look into heatgunning or one of the oven methods (i prefer heatgun personally)

@ jjooeer - It's the ram chips on the underside of your motherboard.
You might not have thermal pads under the 4 ram chips.

Google xbox 360 penny trick or fix.

After that you can try to overheat your system again like you are fixing the rrod but better solutions would be reflow or heatgun.

@ B3lmon7 - It could be both the ram and your southbridge that's causing graphics problems. Apply the same repair but you may need to take a stack of pennies taped together and place them on the southbridge. The stack should be tall enough so that the dvd drive will keep pressure on the chip when the system is closed up.

Hope that helps out.

XBOX Halo Ed. = DuoX2 w/250gb HD
Xbox 360 Red Elite 120GB HDD = no-stealth 1.6 & XBReboot V3 & 1TB usb hdd
PS2 Slim = freemcboot v1.8 - PSP Black Slim = 5.00m33-6
Wii = w/ Blue XCM ii-case, Wiikey2 & softmodded

Lol that sounds so weird, and yeah I still have those pads under the motherboard. I'll try it out I guess.

Yeah I know it sounds ghetto but it's cheap, the penny is pretty close in size to the chip and using pennies you can adjust the height of the stack. The main problem is the poor solder joints and motherboard flexing with heat and cool cycles. A proper reflow and cooling mods like a 12v fan, fan shroud, etc. also help.

You could also figure out what length you needed and cut a plastic dowel to fit but I wrap the stack in electrical tape and tape it to the board. The dvd drive keeps them in place and I don't stand my systems up either.

I'm gonna throw my two cents in here and suggest you go ahead and get a reflow. It's a process where the solder joints under the GPU and RAM bricks are allowed to melt and reform. It's a much longer lasting fix and if the X-clamp fix hasn't done the job, a reflow usually will.

Check your local Craigslist for reflow repairs in your area.
