First look: Free All Music - ad-supported MP3 downloads

article published on 13 January, 2010

Last October a company called Free All Media announced a service to offer ad-supported, DRM-free music. Earlier this week I got an invitation to the Beta for Free All Music. I decided to give it a try and report back to Afterdawn's reader's. Keep in mind that Free All Music is currently in beta testing, and may change significantly, perhaps many times, by its public launch. If you'd like ... [ read the full article ]

welp guess living outside the US has both pros and cons. the con is obviously not being able to sign up to vudu pandora or servives like this but the pro is not having devilish organizations like the MPAA BPI etc control the goverment and spy on you in order to sue you for every penny you own. im gonna have to stick free mp3 sites. uh well

Until all P2P sites are wiped from existence, there's no need for such a service. As for not being able to watch sites such as HULU ( that's a good thing) go to movshare ( dot ) net. Register for free and then search for all that is available on p2p sites. Use vcdq.com and rslinks.org as your viewing guide. Search for programs to watch rather than waiting for something good to appear.

Aside from the watermark this service would probably be acceptable to me. Chances are the industry will do something to screw it up before it goes public though - it just sounds too reasonable to satisfy their insatiable greed.

I would think an audio watermark would be a piece of noise that can't be heard by human ears but could be picked up by an appropriate program. This could be somewhat tough to remove, depending on how it's implemented. If it's poorly implemented one could probably find and remove it using Audacity or similar programs.

A video watermark could be a contained in a single frame that is different for each user. This wouldn't be (easily) detectable by the human eye but very easy for a properly-made program to find in case the movie is shared online.

It seems unlikely you could remove the watermark without re-encoding, but obviously it depends on how (and when) it's added.

I got the e-mail last week myself and had forgotten signing up for this. The tracks are 256bit mp3, so the quality is better than the 192 I usually rip to. The main page is very slow to load, very limited ads so you end up watching the same ones a few times, the music selection is not bad, still plumbing the depths of their catalog. As far as watermarking goes, it doesnt bother me. I will have to see how this all plays out. I miss spiral frog tho.

I suspect a DRM remover MAY get rid of the water mark if you know what to look for. They do re-encode. You would surly use a format that uses Psychoacustic modeling. That will remove audible music your brain will not 'hear'. I fear the watermarks will be in the range of human hearing but at the high end. Low volume high pitched tones well within your own hearing will not be truly heard because you brain only hears the lower pitched competing tones.

I personally use a Napster to Go subscription for my music. I just download the file, take it behind the curtain, come out with another file, convert to MP3, then use that one. The subscription is continually maintained so all this does is allow me to use the music with my iPod as well as not have to sync licenses every month (and loosing everything if I forget).
