i just bought a new wii the other day. i know there are some issues with the legs of a chip not being exposed making it more difficult to chip some systems. i am going to check which wii version i have but until then i was wondering...are there any chips that would cause my wii to get bricked if i update? would nintendo "see" i have a chip and prohibit me from playing online?

No, there are no issues with anything like that.

If you bought a new wii though chipping it is not likely an option. Most new wii's now have a drive that physically cannot read burned disks, not even with a modchip.

If you have a new wii then your only real option is to softmod it and play your games with a USB loader.

i have a lu65 wii with 4.2u ...from what i read im pretty much screwed huh? or do i have some options?

You could go with a Wode Jukebox (www.wodejukebox.com) rather than a modchip but this will cost you more than $100 where as a soft mod is free

u just means that it's the US version of 4.2. For softmodding purposes the region doesn't matter.
