Hi, I?ve got somewhat of a problem I guess. I did flash my drive like 2.5 years ago. I sent myself a copy of the original firmware... unfortunately, google erased it. I need to update it to the latest to be able to play my new backups... ( I dont like to risk scratching my orignals ).

The question is. Do I really need the original firmware to update the drive :S ?

-Marc

You should be OK as you can dump your current drive and get the firmware that way, if need be you can then return to stock.

What drive do you have, it will be either a Hitachi, Samsung or a BenQ (wont be lite-on due to age)?

Well I?ve got an hitachi 78FK that I just did brick using the toolbox and Windows7... Fortunately I could recover the key before « bricking » it. So next step is to chose... Which one of these option seems the easiest...
1- Ordering a new Hitachi GDR-3120L
2- Ordering a naked xbox from ebay (without the drive and cables) and flashing it freshly?

p.s. I did return under windows xp because I feel that windows 7/vista emulation for .net is wrong and risky for direct hardware use. (and most tools are using .net)

I'd keep trying to revive the drive if I were you. Try to get it into vendor mode manually with jungle flasher. I thought I bricked a couple hitachis before but they both ended up losing the fight against me when I kept trying different vendor mode combinations. I even thought I erased one because it locked up on me mid-flash. If you do get another drive, buy a ben-q and spoof the key.

Are you telling me that I can buy a BenQ drive to put into a console that was crafted with an Hitachi drive?

And if I can do so, do I need the orig.bin? I have the drive key but not orig.bin... can that cause a problem?

I?m gonna try jungle flasher but I really doubt that that will work since my computer?s bios gives up on recognizing what?s plugged in in the sata slot (the xbox drive).

UPDATE:
That didn?t work :( ... So... Should I buy a new console since I don?t have orig.bin ? Or replacing the key should be fine?

Firstly, you cannot get to Vendor mode on a hitachi, its mode B you need.

If you are 100% sure you have bricked it, as mentioned you can just get a new drive and spoof it. You have your drive key, so you are good to go. You do not need to buy another xbox.

BenQ's are the best drives, Samsungs & Lite-on's are OK but dont get another hitachi, there rubbish.

I just want to defend Hitachi's! >.< I've never had a problem with any hitachi drives I have used or flashed for people, mainly 46/47 FW rev. I admit that they're probably not the best drives, but having NEVER had a problem with Hitachi's myself, I'd still stand up for them. :-P

Anywho as MrGreaser said, if you can't revive the drive, go for a Benq. They're easy to spoof and you can pick them up quite cheap aswell! ^o^

I have flased 15 - 20 hitachi's, only bricked one so that bits not too bad. Its when the drive needs a POT calibration (quite common issue with hitachi's) it becomes a issue. As you are turning your laser strength up, you are decreasing your drives life expectancy. About 50% of the drive I have done, needed the POT re-calibrating

Yeah I know that's a common problem, but thankfully I've never had to tweak any drives! ^o^ If I can be honest, alot of lite-on drives I have flashed for people have come back with gradual deterioration. Is that common too? o.0

I assume the fact that I've not had any Hitachis come back might have something to do with the fact that most people who's consoles I flashed, got banned and just bought a new console anyway. lol

It has been almost 1 1/2 - 2 years I?m using the same iXtreme firmware on this hitachi? I never got banned. I think they don?t come back because they are live safe.

Unfortunatey I wasn't that lucky... >.< i got caught in the last wave and I had a hitachi 46 drive. Bought the console second hand off my friend and the drive was struggling to read discs. Quick clean of the lense and inside the case (was really grim inside the drive) and has been working flawlessly since last January and still going strong. ^o^

Nice, as that has not been connected to live, you have yourself a nice Jtaggable xbox there.

I think you misunderstood me there. lol That box is now an expensive doorstop to me! lol It got banned October, when Dragon age came out. lol I remember the exact day, because I was at my gf's with my xbox to download the DLC and that stupid message came up! >.< None of the boxes I have are JTAG-able unfortunately! >.< Somebody on my friends list has a knackered box which he's had floating around in his living room for about a year and a half, so I might be getting a JTAG-able one soon! ^o^ Getting proper psyched about getting one! ^o^ Makes me feel like such a dork, but I love it! lol
