Playing games from USB drive - Help!

Hi was hoping someone could shed some light on something which has got me pulling my hair out!

Right i have a 3.4E Wii (bought in the UK first year the wii came out)with a wiikey 2 installed.

Recently i decided to try out some usb loaders via softmod to dump all my backups onto one drive.

I already had HBC via twilight hack but had never installed any IOSs. I followed this guide to softmod my Wii:

All went swimmingly with no issues. I then got hold of a Maxtor OneTouch III 300GB drive i had, created a raw 100gb partition and used WBFS manager to format. All fine.

Have now dumped about 30 of my games onto the drive using USB Loader GX (latest version).

Right so far so good...now the problem. All the games seem to be running perfectly except not long after playing they seem to crash.
On Zelda if i die it fades to black and then just stays black. I can hear the music still running but nothing happens. If i hit the home button the menu appears to go to the system menu or restart the Wii but those buttons dont actually work. If i select one it just stays black and then the home button no longer works.
On Mario Galaxy i've already completed it via the original disc so i'm going through it again as Luigi from the harddrive. After recovering the second star i can hear the music stop while playing and again it fades to black where it would then take me back to the control area to pick another level but it just hangs at this black screen. No errors appear on these black screens.

On SSX blur i can play a level but then when i finish the level it goes to the loading screen and just stays there loading...
Havent tried any of the other games as i figure the same thing will happen.

Have tried WiiFlow 249 and 222 versions...have tried Configurable USB Loader and USB Loader GX all with the same results...thought at first maybe i'm missing an IOS but then wouldnt the games refuse to load and not hang during play?
Also i thought maybe my drive was spinning down so i used the Maxtor Utility to set the idle timout to off and still no joy. In fact to eliminate the drive being the issue i put zelda on my memory stick instead (surely no power down issues on a memory stick) and again it gets stuck on the fade out black screen when i die in the lava....

Very conscious of bricking my wii so i'm not in a hurry to update to v 4.1 or install any IOSs unless you guys reckon thats what i should do and there is a noob guide somewhere for me. Really havent got a clue about ISOs...the only IOSs i've installed are the ones detailed in the guide i followed to softmod...

Any help would be really appreciated!!!

thanks for the reply kittymat...i had a look at that compatibility list but the problems that have been reported in that list are not the problems i have experienced. On that site it mentions the drive not being detected but it detects it on my wii no problem and all the games load...it is during play that they crash to a black screen.

Also i tried it with a memory stick with the same problems...

Any other ideas keep em coming please!! I've literally stopped trying to play from the drive until i get a solution...
