PlayStation is 'poison,' says dictator

article published on 18 January, 2010

According to Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, the Sony PlayStation line of consoles is "poison" and is leading children down the "capitalist road to hell." The PS wasn't the only product feeling the heat from the President however, as he called on Venezuelan manufacturers to create "educational" toys with the features of those indigenous to the nation and not capitalistic dolls such as ... [ read the full article ]

That's got to be the stupidest thing I've heard in a while. Games have these things because that's what the "real world" is really like out there and when games try to put a normal reality into the games all the bad in the world come with it.
This guy seriously need a reality check, and has forgotten about the ESRB ratings, they exist for a reason.

I guess this is the sort of thing he's talking about.
People so badly educated that suck up their 'pop' culture swallowing any old 'Fox facts' and make inaccurate claims without knowing the facts.

Far from being a "military dictator" Hugo Chavez has been twice clearly elected his countries' Pres.

He won 56% of the votes in 1998 and 63% of the vote in 2006.

These were Presidential elections, by the way, which were subject to international scrutiny and a lesson in transparency and honesty which could have taught the USA a lesson in 2000 & 2004.

You'll also find he has held referendums on major issues (he lost one - 51% to 49% - in Dec 2007 and won one in Feb 2009 by 55% to 45%).

You might not like Chavez - and I'll agree there are things going on in his country that are repressive and anti-democratic - but it's just a lie to pretend he is a dictator.
He also runs a country with great natural wealth and which has been relentlessly subject to covert subversion (US backed of course) and attempted coup.
It may well be wrong but given that fact some of what goes on down there (basically shutting out the old pro-USA rich establishment) is perfectly understandable
(and the horrible inequality in Venezuela is guaranteeing him all the popular support he needs and the old establishment nothing but popular loathing)

I think you'll find some sort of draft is hardly unique to Venezuela
(either under Chavez or not).

I agree, some games are poison indeed. I've seen some people who have changed into complete douches because of their gaming systems. However, most of those people played 360s. The problem is with MICROSOFT not SONY PLAYSTATION. lol, jking. It's just in GTA

Chavez very occasionally says something that makes sense...not often but occasionally...and not this time either.

Pat Robertson (he of the Pact with the Devil), on the other hand, never says anything that makes any sense but still manages to be a shining light to a number of Americans, go figure...

Chavez is perfectly correct. Our entire entertainment industry and the gaming industry in particular is absolutely PRO-Capitolist and ANTI-Socialist. Exactly as it should be.
Where's the suprise?

If he doesn't like it why doesn't he use some of that Socialist Brain Trust and build his own "Socialist loving" "Capitolist hating" propoganda games of his own?

You silly boy. "Chavez as dictator" is US propaganda. He's one of the few South American leaders that isn't a corrupt puppet of the United States.

He may be a crazy evil monster that eats the fluffy kittens of Jesus, but it would be factually wrong to deny that he is a democratically elected leader and not a dictator.

So there!

Yeah, Castro and Sadam Husain were "duly elected" as well...

But, I didn't say anything about him being "elected". I said he was a Socialist.

Except Venezuela had international monitoring on the elections Chavez won.

Like him or not the fact is he genuinely did top the popular vote, freely & fairly.
Twice in open free & fair elections - and both times under the scrutiny of respected outside international observers.

True, I'm just wondering what the big deal about that is?

Particularly in a country where, until Chavez came along, it was a corrupt undemocratic puppet US client state where the vast majority of the people were locked out of a share of Venezuela's vast natural wealth.

Why do you think Chavez was elected if not to redress this incredible disparity which the previous 'establishment' had ignored entirely?

I wonder, does the term 'socialist' entitle a complete disregard for the will of the majority of the Venezuelan people?
I'm willing to bet amongst some of the more fascist minded it does.
A 'socialist' state booting out the old puppets, nationalising a share of the wealth for the people & reaping the benefit of highly priced oil money.
Which is set to continue rising.
I bet some are choking hard having to put up with that one!

I suppose that if you think that a country which does not allow the free expression of ideas, like in a simple Play Station Game is somehow good, then bully for you.

And if I've not been clear enough, ... yes, I'm saying that SOCIALISM is BAD... and CAPITOLISM is GOOD.

Our country, on its very worst day is a hundred thousand times better than ANY socialistic country on its best day.

Typical right wing Americans, taking trash from Fox News as the absolute truth while automatically associating "socialism" with dictatorships. I'm glad Chavez tells as it is and sticks it to the US, especially considering that the US actually sponsored real dictators in the region via financial backings and coups, particularly the murderous Pinochet and Videla regimes that murdered some 30,000 political enemies and forced others to disappear.

There's Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman that regularly rails against video games, I guess that makes the US a dictatorship right?

Okay, I'm stuck on the 4th level of Ruthless Dictator 3 and can't get past the talking onion. It frustrated me so much I ran out to a pawn shop and bought a 2 Live Crew cassette. Oh yeah it had a parental warning but if I've learned anything from my PS it's to spit in the face of rules.

Oh my God maybe he's right. What have I become?!

"Those games they call 'PlayStation' are poison. Some games teach you to kill. They once put my face on a game, 'you've got to find Chavez to kill him.'"

That's what his dumb-ass gets for being a dictator...as if somebody wasn't going to make fun of his insane-ass....

Now I want to go and buy that game just to get a screencap of me putting a cap in his ass and send the pic to him!
