System: Nintendo Wii (NTSC-U) Serial# LU38 F/W 4.1U (upgraded by Super Mario original disc)

I have a virgin Nintendo Wii here, I can't seem to get soft modded.

I have followed Larry's guide and read through the complete guide and replies trying to find my problem. I can't seem to find an answer or previous question.

I have d/l'd Larry's soft mod pack for 4.1. I extracted those files to my SanDisk 2.0GB SD Card. It is formated FAT, not FAT32.

I ran NUS 1.2 and downloaded the four .WAD files required. I copied those 4 .WAD files to the root directory of the SD card. My SD card looks like the one pictured in larry's guide.

I turn the Nintendo Wii on, go to Wii settings on the bottom left. I then click on Data Management, then Channels, then click the SD Card tab on the top.

It then prompts me for an SD card. I place the SD card in to the Wii.

After that, the software does not boot and I get a QUESTION MARK (?) in the channel.

This only gives me the options to Move/Copy/Erase.

What am I doing wrong?

1) The SD should be formatted FAT32, not FAT.

2) Some people have problems when going to the SD menu via the wii settings for some reason. Try hitting the small SD card icon at the bottom of the main menu screen.

1.) I have attempted to format my SD card to FAT32. However it appears to not function properly (the format that is). It shows inaccurate disk space statistics. I have read that this is common with SD cards 2GB and under.

I did however try this with FAT32 and had the same results.

2.) I tried loading the SD card from the SD card icon. This again would produce the same results, can not load this channel with a ? mark.

Hm. I've never heard of that problem with FAT32 and small SD cards. How are you formatting it? If you've been using the windows format tool then you should try the panasonic SD formatter. You might get better results that way.

Prior to attempting the soft mod I checked the SD card and confirmed with was formatted for the FAT file system.

After that I used Windows's tool to Format the drive in FAT32. That is when I noticed the disk usage issue.

I even formatted through CMD line with format FS:FAT32 G: and it produced the same result.

When formatting with the Panasonic(C) SD format utility it will only format in FAT, and not FAT32. There is no option for it.

Very strange. I'm not sure exactly why the SD is behaving like this but I'm pretty sure it's the cause of your softmod problems. You wouldn't happen to have another SD laying around, would you? Maybe something from a digital camera you can borrow?

I do not have access to another SD card easily available (I live in a town of 150 People). Wallyworld is 60 miles away LOL!

I am under the same assumption you are, that the SD card or Reader/Writer is no good. I will look for another one tomorrow I guess, or order one from Newegg.

It is a brand new SD card though, and worked fine in the Wii the other day when I put photographs on it.

I would try another SD card.

Even if the SD card works with Wii picture function etc. etc. it could still have issue's with homebrew apps.

CONFIRMED SOLUTION FOR ? (QUESTION MARK) IN SD CARD CHANNEL

If this happens to you, it is not a problem with the softmod pack software, or your Wii. This issue arises from a bad format of an SD card. My Wii apparently will only take a FAT32 formatted SD card to properly work.

Solution? Try a new SD card, or format on another PC. Apparently my PC was having issues formatting the SD card in to FAT32. Placed SD card in another machine and everything worked fine.
