Hello,
Ive just completed the RROD fix with replacing the xclamp and thermal paste. Everything worked fine until i screwed the xbox together then 3 RROD came around again. i took everything apart again replaced the thermal paste and put new thermal paste on 3 times. nothing worked it didn't even boot up just straight away 3 RROD came up.
Ive tried to figure out the code of the error but when i do i just get 4 red lights i press eject button over and over but still i only get 4 lights.
Ive noticed around the Gpu that thermal paste is pretty far back onto the "components"? (sorry don't know what to call them small things on the gpu)because of when i was removing Microsoft thermal compound i pushed some into the smaller gaps of the "components" (accident). Would this effect the conductivity? or cause the rrod.
I'm using arctic silver thermal paste, and spreading lightly.
Ive also noticed that on the power supply that only an orange light shows.. while RROD is going off. if that means anything?
If anyone has any suggestions that would be great appreciated!
Thanks.

hey evilyeti
you haven't mentioned if you heated the GPU up by connecting the fan up and laying it over the CPU heatsink or not?
can you clarify what you did after the clamps were fitted please :)

That's what I was thinking sounds like all your doing is cleaning the chips and applying thermal paste

im also curious if you replaced the xclamps with screws or not? Sounds like you just put on new paste, But didn't use screws to secure the board.

Well it really doesn't matter if you use screws or place the X-clamps back not in the short run anyways on the other hand if you don't reflow the ring won't go away that's the reason they're there. Overheating to reflow the chips is not the best way I use a reflow station to heat the chip individually with heat from both sides of the board so far I'm 10 for 10 on RROD and E74 and none of them have come back I also 12v the fans while the box is open

To start off thanks for the quick reply's.
@ SYMBYAXI
didn't reflowed the board i didn't think that was necessary, after it worked. maybe that's where i need to relook it
@ Toaster68
i didn't heat up the GPU, i only replaced the paste and xclamps with machine screws, nylon washers and metal washers. but once i refitted the machine screws for the 1st time i just plugged it in and it ran fine for about 10-15 mins
So all in all i need a to reflow the board? i think its abit out of my league tho, i might look for xbox repairs around my area
Thanks for the heads up guys

Try the full xclamp fis first, see HERE
Make sure you do the, "Now for the most important part and most likely the point where the majority of people who were unsuccessful completing this fix failed." bit. This might work for you and save you the cost of a reflow.

No mr evil there is no other method lol you need to heat the board in specific areas ie the GPU and CPU to around the melting point of the solder which is about 200 degrees centigrade i think......
You can use a heat gun but you run the risk of self harm and melting parts of the 360 that are best left alone :) lol

If the fan is not running, you will not be able to do the fix on the link I posted.
You have 2 options....
1) Reflow
2) The heatgun method, this is actually a good fix. Not as good as the reflow of course, but it works around 80% of the time IMHO. As Toaster68 says though, you need to make sure you protect all of your ports and capacitors (dont forget the eject & sync, ive melted these before).
I hope this helps.

I don't see anything wrong mr creaky sir with miketrevs post, he was only highlighting the options that are open to mr yeti about a reflow or the heatgun method.

It's not up for debate, the Mods have made plenty of posts on the matter. AD is not here for members to advertise their own paid services, no matter how long they've been here. Period. The group of guys in question can discuss such services to their heart's content on their own IRC channel, but what needs to stop is those same people advertising those services on the forums.

Not sure what relevance that has, it's Bush & Obama who have been systematically shredding the Constitution, not AD's Moderators or Forum Rules..
Now how about this thread gets back to the OP's problem, without advertising members' paid services...

hey creaky i'm only playing with you... sorry old chap, i was actually pertaining to the 1st amendment and the abridging the freedom of speech but like you said it's back to the OP's original problem......
Mr Yeti, i whole heartedly think that the cheapest and most convenient option is to try a heatgun, these are fairly cheap if you can't borrow one, it would be better to have variable temp settings, mine has 50 degress upto 600 degrees C. As for instructions there are some on this forum and plenty on youtube... although some look a little dodgy lol
hope this helps.....

Thanks for the Help guys, Greatly appreciated
I think i will be going the easy way out and getting it reflowed.. $125 (Aus) including postage, cheaper then buying a new one and then re modding it ( don't have the proper tools to mod the newer ones), i just hope that it doesn't stuff up again
Again Thanks alot

I used this to fix my RROD and it really works. You just have to make sure you cook the thermal paste. Because I did everything step by step and it didn't work at first because I didn't cook the thermal paste long enough. I how ever still got the 3 lights on first power up unlike the tutorial which they get 2 but just leave the XBOX on for like 5-10 minutes and you should end up getting 2 lights.
