Hi, new member but have got good advice from other people's threads before. I know there are a few threads on PS3s not reading external HDDs, mine seems a little different - I have 3 external HDDs from before buying my PS3 and while 2 would never be read, one always would. USB sticks almost always worked.
Until a month or 2 ago. Then the 250GB HDD could no longer be read, and most USB sticks could no longer be read. Very strange as HDD and USB sticks are read just fine on my MacBook. Even stranger, 2 nights ago I watched a .avi file on a USB stick that the PS3 would read, then put another .avi file on it and the PS3 no longer recognises the USB stick. Very confused.
I thought it might be the USB ports on the PS3 but I've tested them with controller chargers and they are fine. The only thing I can think of that has changed is the new PS3 operating system update.
I've tried reformatting USB sticks as FAT-32 and they still can't be read, so I'm now stuck. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Do the drives show up at all, or is it like they are not even plugged in? If they show up, try pressing triangle and then "display all".
Also, the PS3 seems to have a lot of troubles with file tags...I found that the system will either lockup or ignore the files when I put in a USB stick with a corrupt MP3 on it...even if there is just one bad file among thousands. I also had some troubles with foreign music...some charachters that are not on US keyboards can cause the same problem, while other non-US characters might just cause one file to not show up. On top of that, larger ID3 tags with multiple cover images can greatly slow or even freeze the XMB.
Hi KillerBug, the drives don't show up at all. The weird thing is that it is so inconsistent, as I mentioned the other day the PS3 read a USB stick just fine, then literally a few minutes later, when I put another .avi file on it couldn't be read. Same goes for the one 250GB HDD that has been able to be read - it was being read just fine for over 2 years, now nothing.
Re: corrupt files - over the last 2 years there have been some files that the PS3 hasn't been able to play, ones that work fine on my MacBook using VLC or MPlayer. BUT, the PS3 has still been able to see the USB stick or HDD and would play most files just fine. All very strange an now very annoying.
All I can think is that there must be something wierd happening when the macbook accesses the drives...here is a test:
Take the stick with 2 files that does not show up at all and delete the second file...see if it now works with the PS3. If it still does not work, format it with the macbook and load the file that worked to begin with onto it and test it with the PS3. If it still does not work, then take the drive to a windows computer, copy the file to the hard drive, format the drive, and copy the file back. If it then works with the PS3, then you know it is something from the mac...otherwise you know that there is something physicaly wrong with the drive or with the PS3...most likely the PS3 if it happens with many different drives.

I can't speak for that website, but generaly gameskins are pretty trouble-free. Also, please don't hijack other people's threads.
