i have many .vob files on my computer, small files, not full movies, only of 4-5 minute clips each, already in .vob format that play through the dvd programs on my computer. these are all very basic .vob files, with no subtitle extra data, no extra audio track data, no menu stuff or anything like that encoded into them, just the audio and video. do i have to do anything special to these files in order to burn them to a dvd-r so i can watch on a dvd player? is there re-encoding that has to be done or can it be thrown into a Video_TS folder and played or thrown into a dvd-r compliation and then burned as is? let me know if there's any special things needed to be done when making .vob files into a playable dvd.

Hi aeugnewty,

The VOB files are not enough. You also need the IFO and BUP files. If you don't have them, use IFOEdit to create them. There is a menu called "Create IFO" or something.

hi again, with the ifo program, it says you need an mv2 file and also an audio file, if the video is already in VOB format, do you really need to split it to make an ifo? if i need to split it, whats the best program to use to split it? i heard if you split the files then rejoin for an ifo or whatever, that it'll lose quality and stuff in between, and i want to avoid that as much as possible. if someone has the advice, i'd appreciate it.

You must do something wrong. When you click on "Create IFOs" IFOEdit prompts you for a VOB file.

ok, yes, i had pushed the wrong button to start, but i got into the "select vob" menu, then when i click to start the creation of the IFO, it tells me "could not find any VOB unit in VOB file(s)" does anyone know what this problem means and how to fix it? thanks.

Well, I'm not an IFOEdit specialist and I don't know the meaning of this error.

If you have Nero 6, try with NVE (NeroVision Express). Run it, select "Make new DVD", import all your VOB files, click Next a few times and wait for the disc to be burnt. If you are lucky, NVE won't recode your VOB files so you'll get the original image quality. If you are not, NVE will re-encode them and you'll lose quality to some extend.

ok, i think this will be my last question. if i convert an avi or mpg to m2v and wav files with TMPGEnc, how do i convert or author those files so they'll go onto the dvd-r the same as the vob files will so it can be played in a standalone player? will the TMPGEnc dvd author do that?

Yes indeed. That's exactly the purpose of TMPGEnc DVD Author: multiplex audio and video into VOB, and create the corresponding IFO and BUP files.
