Geohot, the guy behind iPhone jailbreaking, just publicly stated that he has hacked the playstation 3. I know the community we'll be telling themselves, "Yeah right! We'll believe it when we see it" but this guy has always been true to his word. Still needs to reverse engineer the software but I truly think this is it guys. Read the blog and let me know what you think. Oh happy day!

The guy has talent, no one can deny that.
If he says he has done it, I believe him. As you say, he has always been true to his word, and his work on the iPhone completely changed that community.
However, I've been following his work closely, and it seems the hack requires some pretty extensive hardware modifications (pic), so I wouldn't suggest anyone gets their hopes up for anything workable just yet.
Congratulations to him, good work.

He did try his best to create something that can't be patched with a firmware update. Hopefully we aren't looking at something that will require too much physical modification.

I think that, for a while at least, is very wishfull thinking. The pic I linked to shows only one of the pics he posted showing how he had dismantled the PS3.
But, the first iPhone hack was also a complicated hardware mod, and look where that's at today...One click and your device is completely unlocked and your free to do whatever you want with it, and thats all down to GeoHot.

I knew he could do it. Yes, I too hope it doesn't require too much hardware modification.

All the stuff he attached might just be for reading the system ROM and such...once it is all sorted, the mod could be as easy as a firmware flash.
Also, if you look closely, it seems he only has 1 extra board, a power supply, and paralell to USB adapter...Look a bit closer, and you see that it all seems to be connected with just two wires...a yellow ground and a white signal. He even says that it connects to a paralell port on his blog...so it can't be that advanced.
I don't trust anyone, but it is about time this platform was broken...and this guy seems to be the most likely one to do it at the moment.

There was another pic he posted which showed alot more modification, cant find the link though, i think it was on his twitter.
But like I say, the iPhone started with a pretty extensive mod to unlock mthe carrier, but now it just a case of 1 click and you're done. Theres also the fact that he managed to make the iPhone jailbreak invisable to Apple, even when connecting to the app store, iTunes etc. That's gotta look good for people who don't want to be detected by Sony, although the PS3 is obviously a lot more advanced than the iPhone.

Looking good, just not sure how this will help as copying games into a Blu-Ray disc would cost a lot of time and money.
And I just hope that when the hack gets released, the PS3 doesn't end up like the PSP.

Hopefully he wont release a way which can't be detected by Sony...that way at least people will have to buy games if they want to play online.

I wonder how long he'll take to release more info. Since this news has shown up on Kotaku and several other sites, i'm growig a bit impatient.
Anyway, why are some people so worried about this. Even if the system is indeed hacked i doubt that Sony will lose money. Infact, i'd argue that it will help increase the consoles popularity.

I'm afraid that it won't be as simple as that.
Even if the hack did enable the possibility of playing pirated PS3 games, it would take too long to download 1st party titles.

Enough seeders and anything can be downloaded over a 2 day period at worst...at least with a half decent high speed connection. And hopefully we'll see a way to play the games from an .iso image on an external hard drive - that's what I'm hearing and it sure would save a lot of money on discs and blu ray burners if you don't already have one. Can't wait to see more...

Progress is made and the pirates immediately pounce. Hahahah.
For that reason alone, I would find it incredibly amusing if all the guy does is list everything he used and how much it all cost.

Well I for one am happy for this I mean this is a ps3 were talking about here not just a wii or even a xbox 360 we're talking about ( no offense) I mean llok at the psp when it was hacked it unleashed so much potential from using it as a universal remote to playing backups to homebrew games the possibilities were limitless not were talking about a ps3 with its cpu and everything else this is what I see in about 2 years ( or at least I wish)
I ps3 with 2 terabyte drive able to run every game console games (besides xbox 360 and wii) able to run windows 7 linux and mac (really wishing there) able to run GREAT homebrew apps.
The way I see it sure this will eventually bring piracy ( I am afraid I might sub come tp it a little at least) but the good will out way the bad in the end and I cant wait to fully unleash my ps3 potential and I congratulate geo with his success.

Well, I can download any 2Gb files under an hour (about 50 minutes normally). Even if a BD is full, I can get it in much less than a day. Don't mind waiting.
And I consider my connection "modest".
Some neighbors of mine have FTTH - they might get a full BD under 5H (depending on hardware specs, especially hard drive write speed).
So download time won't really be an issue IMO.
Don't beleive that mambo jambo crap that if someone hacks the PS3 then game quality will suffer and "poor" Sony will ache for that. I'm still buying my GOWIII box, with or without hack!! I neeeeeeed it!
As for GeoHot himself I think he deserves my applause if he really did it. In a theoretical point of view he's doing us all a favour by showing the perfect secure system is yet to be found.
GeoHot is an example of what hacking is suppose to be - educational, rewarding and usefull!!! He's not doing it to get ritcher (or steal your visa).
When guys like him vanish, those will be the days people will start crying about someone stealing money from their accounts (PSN also deals with money) and not having a clue how they do it!!
Thank you for showing there are vulnerabilitys in the system. Future ones will have to be redesigned. PS3 was almost perfect, but "apparently" it has flaws. Next generation devices will be more secure I'm sure.

Why's that?
Cause i dont believe him.
Especially after reading that "5 weeks" that he posted i believe that he just cocking around to get donations and advertise he's self.
But, even if it is true do you honestly believe that Sony will let this?
Especially this year that Sony is about to release 1st line, 1st Party titles?
As i said in the news sections, the only thing that a PS3 hack will do, is to give us more often FW updates, and for sure will make some games to need the latest official FW to even play.
MO is that Sony already knows about that and by putting all this effort behind PS3 lock, all this years, is already prepared.
That is just MO my friend, nothing more.

But look at the state piracy has got the games on the PSP into...
No developers want to invest in producing good new games for the system because they know every little kid with a net connection will be ripping them off and stealing their work. You can't blame the developers for that, so the wreckage of the console has to be blamed on the pirates.
Back on topic, Im sure GeoHot will release the hack, once he has programmed the software to actually do something, and tidied up the hardware a little. Im not sure if any of you guys are familiar with the iPhone scene, but if he says he will do something, he will.
