i just replaced a my old hitachi laser with the SF-HD63. removed the solder ball and installed correctly. when trying an original, the drive will say "reading" for awhile then say "open tray" i have not messed with the pot because i assume i shouldnt have to being a brand new laser. could someone please give some ideas of what i may be doing wrong or need to do?

You removed the anti static point but did you get all the solder off completely? Do you have a multimeter to make sure the pot is calibrated?

yes make sure the solder is completely removed,,,i have done 5 of them and they all worked right out of the box,,

i do have a multimeter, which i used to check its calibration. itst around 399 out of box. i also tried using my old bricked samsung laser which was an original from microsoft and i get the same results.

It's possible your laser ribbon is bad. Check the end that goes into the laser to make sure it has not been damaged.

it was the ribbon cable. thanks for the tippy. i got another one from the samsung. i took the calibration down to 342 but it makes a grinding noise. i have verbatim disks on the way. with verbatim do i need to take the calibration as low as i have it for these crap memorex?

ok, now I am getting a reading error when attempting to log into a TM deathmatch on cod. the game boots up but when it attempts to load the map (connecting...0) xbox screen pops up stating i should attempt to clean the disk or restart the system. I have a brand new laser in it and never calibrated. the gears work fine too as i have replaced the motor ribbon cable. all cables look fine. I ordered verbatim and will try thoughs. also, the disk drive makes somewhat a clicking/grinding noise. is this bad or neutral?
