hi

i have an old xbox 360 pro 20gb which doesn't have hdmi out. i have just been given a sharp lc-32p55e hdtv which has 1 x hdmi and 1 x 15 pin connector. how can i connect my xbox to either of these (preferably hdmi) to get 1080i?
i have looked all over ebay and google for a replacement cable but can't find one that has hdmi on one end for the tv and the standard xbox video connector on the other. i currently have an optical cable connected to my standard xbox 360 video cable for surround sound, so any replacement cable would have to come with optical out as well.

thanks for any replies!

by 15 pin connector i'm guessing you mean vga? There's an xbox 360 vga cable that can handle 1080i just fine. Component cables will also do 1080i. I cant remember ever seeing a component cable that has an optical output (though it probably exists) but i know for sure the vga one definitely has it

Try this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HD-AV-HIGH-DEFINIT...=item5ad69b7976
The red, blue and green give a similar picture as an hdmi lead.

Even if it outputs 1080p, most of the 360 games run on 720p. With that in mind, some tv sets look better in hdmi mode and some look a bit less sharp in component mode.

So we're saying the xbox upscales from 720 if your output is set to 1080i/p?

Sort of even though it doesn't make any marginal improvement from my point of view. For example, my ps3 runs 720p games on 720p and 1080p games on 1080p on my tv. The xbox will not change the game from 1080p to 720p; however, I have yet to notice any difference in either mode so there you go.

I'm slightly confused then. My TV definitely says the output is at 1080p, but if games are running at 720 what the hell is the point in including a 1080 option?

that TV as i looked it up has composite and vga. composite is just standard so i wouldn't do that, definitely go for the VGA. but beware that the cheaper non MS cables have a bad rep for ghosting problems and are usually not worth it. while the MS cable is pricey it does do 1080p and will also upscale standard def DVD movies and this is the only cable that will do that too.
i have the composite, component and VGA cables and i have found the Component to be the best for games cause the VGA tends to wash out the color and it is much MUCH more vibrant on the component when compared.
so if VGA is your only option for some HD gaming then by all means go for it and try not to get the cheap cables, i know its tempting but will only lead to disappointment and eventually getting the better ones.

thanks for the replies!

as suggested, i looked into the vga cable and found this...

http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/prod...vga_hd_av_cable

it's the official microsoft one and is by far the cheapest that i could find. there were loads on ebay at half that price, but i'm not sure that they are original microsoft cables so i didn't risk it.

cheers again!

pretty sure those aren't MS so you made a wise choice. i was at a game stop and saw a pair for sale for 10 bucks but when i compared them to the MS branded ones they didn't match up as the MS has a hologram sticker on it and branded into the plastic "Microsoft". the game stop employees swore it was MS cable but it was not.

my cable has arrived and it's a vast improvement to using scart! i've seen my mates 360 which is connected via hdmi on a 1080p tv, and altho the quality i'm getting aint quite as good as his, it's still much better than scart.
that led me to think tho. at some point in the next few months, i'm going to buy a bigger tv that has 1080p. if i buy one that doesn't have a vga input, how can i connect my 360 to it to get 1080p? is there another video cable which i am unaware of that has an hdmi connector instead of vga or scart? or would i have to buy a new 360 with hdmi out?

thanks again :)

Most likely your new tv will have VGA input as probably 90% do.

However they made an HDMI adapter for xbox's that didn't come with them.
