Hi All,
Well I was up till 4 this morning Jtagging another Xenon and I though I would post my learning experience.
I was soldering for around 3 hours with various issues (e97, flash controller not detected etc), so i decided to take a different approach to the soldering.
Instead of soldering the wires directly to my xbox motherboard, I soldered on some header pins I taken of a old PC Motherboards USB , once I had done this, I simply used a couple of old CD Audio leads soldered to my LTP port and hey presto :D
Mike

Inspired. I'll use this method when I finally get a JTAGable box. (My fine motor skills suck!)

Ill post actual pics when I get back from work, but in the mean time this is what I did....
I desoldered one of these from a old PC motherboard,

I then soldered the single pins from the USB pin header to here on the XBOX motherboard (circled in red)

I then used a few of these to attach to LTP wiring.

I managed to get my JTAG done in half the time by doing it this way, its soooo much easier soldering on solid pins that wire!
Plus I got no errors reading or writing, files were identical first time :D

Nice method. I'll remember this.
Back when satellite hacking was still do-able and I had to JTAG a sat receiver to modify it, I mounted a DB25 (serial/VGA looking connector) male connector to the outside of the enclosure with the JTAG wires running to it. Then I had a separate DB25-->LPT cable that could be connected or disconnected from the box at will, and a NAND reflash just required me to reconnect that cable and not have to take anything apart.
I've seen a similar hack for the 360 on some homebrew sites using CAT5 ethernet cable as well.
However, I like your hack better, as it takes much less setup time, and honestly, NAND flashes are probably not going to be necessary all too often (I think).

How did you solder the header pins to the board? Did you head up the solder from the bottom of the board? How do u get solder on it given that the bottom of the header pin is blocking direct access to the board.
Thanks

I believe there are surface-mount pin headers, that have solder ready on the underside, you just flux the points and apply heat to the pin (I remember working with these on the original Xbox)
I thought about this aswell, but I didn´t bother since yo can use the xbox to flash your nand once you´ve got XBR on it.

I think you're on to something here. I tried desoldering one of these and it isn't easy. I would also assume you could buy these perhaps? How in the hell did you desolder that?

to be honest, i dont feel that soldering the wires is that hard. especially after you solder the end of the wires before trying to solder to the board. once that is done, its basically a hard piece of metal and does the exact same thing as these pins.

I have done 4 boxes so far, so it isn't impossible, just a pain in the ass. If this makes it easier and less error prone, then I rather go /w the cleaner and easier approach.
I will research it. All you need to do is read a few times and write once. So even if conductive glue works, you maybe able to just glue the thing on just enough to get a few reads and writes.

the glue ive definitely thought about using, especially on the db1f1 point where there is very little solder to work with to begin with.

I just solder to the alternate point under the board. 10x easier. That pt under the board takes about 30 seconds to do. Easy to get to.

true, but i dont like soldering under the board. its easier to just use db1f1 and then use the point on the RF board instead of under it as well.

I agree, but it works the same, so I went with that route.
Good luck and let me know if you are able to get to the top point to hold solder

I just slid off the plastic part with a pen knife, then heated up the top of the pin and pulled it off with pliers. I didnt have to pull hard, just needed to give each pin about 10 seconds heat on a 30w iron

After I removed the 7 pins I needed from the old PC motherboard, I simply held the pin with my pliers, heated it up and it went through he xbox point like a hot knife through cheese. I then put a tiny bit of solder at the bottom of the pin on the other side (bottom) of the board

Okay that makes sense. I have a few old boards laying around I could use. Heck, my office is a wreck. Can you buy these things? Also, Wash makes a good point if you add the solder to the wire first. This is a nice add. Good work.

Yeah, took me a bit to find them as I thought they were called Header Pins, but apparently they are called Pin Strips Linkie
Obviously, this is a UK site but im thinking somewhere like radio shack in the US will have them.
If you cant get any, let me know and I can stick you some in the post (obviously it will take a while to get to you though)

Yeah you can buy them In single line breakaways and double line breakaways. I am sure you can get them from many places. I use them a lot on remote controls. I get them here

Hey Mike, I actually thought of this idea before considering that some customers will want "updates/upgrades". I didn't because I was sure of the diode. All tuts say to solder it directly to the motherboard, and with using pinheaders, figured the diode would have to be at the end of the wire, just before the connector that goes to the pinheader. So where do you place your diode.
I hadn't thought of CD Audio connectors, I was gonna use IDE connectors. I'll be using pinheaders henceforth.

I basically snipped the wire and soldered the diode to the wire directly above the pin header
Like so....

I will get the actuall pics of what it looks like this evening.

Now I can honestly say I've tried this.
For me... well it didn't go so well. I was using some pins that I got from a broken LPT cable. They would not heat up long enough for solder to stick or anything. It sucked. Wasted lots of my time.
Just soldering straight up ended up being the easiest for me. But maybe if I had bought the other pins that would've been different. Who knows.
Regards
Budro
