This 360 has a samsung drive with ixtreme 1.6. Console hasn't been banned since it's almost never been connected to live.
Should the firmware be upgraded?
Besides making it less likely that the console will get banned if and when it connects to live (maybe to download an update or something), will the firmware upgrade make it possible to play wave 4 back ups without a boot disk?

there is no LY for sammy drives yet but when it comes out you should upgrade your FW. LT does not and will not in the future require the activate.iso (boot disc)

Hitachi has 1.51 plays Wave4
Sammy has 1.61 plays Wave4
BenQ has 1.61 plays Wave4
Lite-On has LT (not sure on Wave 4 should since 1.6 did w/ activate.iso)
not sure on live safe i know i have not been banned with benq since 1.4ix even with the ban wave i think they track based on games played and when and other factors possibly, not sure on that, but LT will not come out for BenQ its only meant for Lite-On Drives!

so when is the new firmware for Samsung drives going to be released?
you need to remember, there is already wave 5 and wave 6 games.

LT and Hitachi play ALL NEW WAVES and will play any future waves. as far as LT for sammy drives, cant tell ya bud.

Not Sure man but as far as these new wave games goes seem like for most people they are working on ix.161. i wouldnt go on live with em but they work from posts ive read if you mean games like mass effect 2

LT can play any wave game. And you're wrong, it is coming for all drives. Benqs first then samsungs then hitachis. You can see from the latest post on team jungle's twitter that the benq one is almost done: http://twitter.com/TeamJungle other than that there is no ETA (though it's only been a week since LT was released for the liteon)

Okay....1.6 fw for sammy requires that active iso disc.... 1.61 for sammy doesn't...
LT fw for Sammy when it comes out is for playing on X-box live, apprently its safe for Live....but use at own risk nobody knows for sure if it is undetectable by M$ ...it might be now but in future could be detectable.
1.60 requires active iso disk
1.61 doesn't use active iso disk
LT apparently safe for Live (Maybe) :)

I don't drink i Smoke, And when LT was first released or even in the proccess of being made, it was stated to be only for Lite-ON, Oh my bad that i don't follow twitter so i wasn't on the absolute second on the issue at hand....
