Hi Guys,

First off I have looked over the current threads but am finding it hard to make sense of what I need to do.

Basically I haven't done anything with my wii for ages. It's wiikey modded and is on version 3.something (3.2 I think?)

I just wanted to see if you thought I should upgrade the firmware or if the softmodding is a good idea? I'm not really sure what the benefits are and if it can be done etc.

You can either Softmod it or upgrade the firmware on your Wiikey, if it supports it. Either way I recommend softmod. But research some more. A good place to start is wiihacks.

if you just want to play backup discs you should be able to just upgrade to 4.2u and ur good to go.

I cant see a reason to upgrade the firmware on the wiikey unless you are below 1.9g which allowed Mario Galaxy play. 1.9s is the last one released and that fixed an issue with not being to load original dual layer discs of which there are currently only two i think. Super Smash Bros and Metroid Prime Trilogy.

from 4.2 you can softmod if you want but system updates dont affect the mod chips so your not hurting anything by upgrading to 4.0, 4.1, or 4.2.

If you stay at 3.2 or whatever there are some newer games like punch out, NSMB, etc that you will be unable to play. You will also not be able to use SDHC memory cards.

You could find the IOS files that those games require and just install them to stay at 3.2 or below but once you get to 4.0 and above you get SDHC support which comes in handy if ur messing with homebrew.

The USB loaders out now are kick ass and it would be worth softmodding just to make use of them. I have softmodded my wii with original wiikey running firware 1.9g on system menu 4.0u and everything is fine.

Since 4.2 is the latest and the current softmod guide works fine on that version that would be the best place to start if you just want to get the latest shit.

Again, if you just want to play backup games then go ahead and update to 4.2u via online and dont mess with the wiikey firmware unless you are unable to play Super Mario Galaxy or plan on purchasing original copies of Smash Bros or Metroid Prime Trilogy.
1.9g should be fine.
