'Avatar' likely to surpass 'Titanic' today in domestic sales

The blockbuster epic Avatar is set to pass Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all-time today (non adjusted for inflation), also becoming the second movie to ever surpass the $600 million plateau in the United States.
Titanic holds the number one spot with $600,788,188 in sales, and Avatar, by most unofficial accounts, is at $598 million as of print time.

Actually, these numbers also taken into consideration the extra price that was tagged on to the regular ticket price to see it in 3D (usually 5 to $8 more on average). it's highly unlikely that the final gross would be anything close to wha it is now. Cameron made damn sure that the 3D price went into the total gross for the film. If you were to include inflation, Gone With The Wind STILL tops the list of all-time grossing films, estimated at around $1 billion, and while it didn't have all the eye candy we do today, it comes to show that a film doesn't always need that to make a profit. - BLUEBOY

I would love to see this apples to apples, in other words compare it at the prices that were current the year that Titanic came out. No doubt in my mind that Avatar is a much better movie, just be interesting to see those comparisons week to week from opening to ???.

If Gone With The Wind came out today in 2010, it wouldn't even get near $100 million.
Different audience, different time, but I saw that same article which adjust films for inflation, and Avatar (about a week ago) was #34 on the list. Some of the top 10 (I don't remember exact order) were:
Gone With the Wind
Star Wars
Snow White & 7 Dwarves
Sound of Music
Jaws
Titanic
Tough to argue that some of these movies aren't timeless.

Special features are great however i felt the story was lacking well in the way that we have seen it before. This movie just hlams up an already told story soo nothing special here however i do recommend watching it at least once and get ready for a long movie.

I liked the movie. But no more than any other movie, i don't get fooled by hype (District 9 anyone ?) (hype i mean).
I heard the movie described yesterday as "Dances with Smurfs".

Haha lol yeah, District 9 is awesome. But I've yet to see Avatar, I'm expecting to see a excellent movie if it surpassed Titanic.

No District 9 was ok, again nowhere remotely near the hype.

This is the most ridiculous comparison I have ever seen.
When Sound of Music was released the purchasing power of $ was far greater. Gasoline cost around US$ 0.18 per gallon compared to now which is close to 15 times as much.
I could buy a cup of coffee and a donut for $0.20. I could buy a Pontiac Le Mans off the floor of the showroom for under US$ 3,000/=, a chevy Imppala for $ 4,000/= and a Cadillac Coupe DeVille for around US$ 7,000/=
I could watch a Friday night double feature in a cinema house for $0.75/= with free coffee thrown in. I could go to ultra plush theaters on Friday night for US$ 3.50 where practically 2 people could sit in a single seat!!!
So if Hollywood or anyone wants to make a fair comparison they should do it by the number of paid viewers or compensate for adjust for inflation !!!

If we are going to do comparisons then i am going to mention what this movie reminded me of.
For me the whole story line was basically Ferngully a animated cartoon about the environment. The machines that the people got into reminded me of Mech Warrior and the blue Avatar guys reminded me of Star Wars Episode one.
But i to emphasis that its is a complete rip off the FernGully Cartoon.

You know i've been hearing this crap ever since Avatar surpassed titanic in sales and who cares! money making is money making and this is not 1939 it's 2010!
Thanks like saying that Roger maris's home run record dosn't count cause during his time he played more games than Babe Ruth did and the next guy that surpassed Roger Maris's home run record didn't count either cause they now play more games today in baseball than they did during Roger's time? so are we to assume that Babe Ruth still holds that record? No we don't according to MLB, so why would we hold the new money record that Avatar did! forget the past Blueboy your living in the past this is the here and now live in the hear an now!
