Hey guys, So i Got a New 500GB External HDD and i have about 400GB of Data on the Drive, unfortunately the Drive is Formatted as NTFS and i was wondering if there is any way to "change" it to Fat32 without the Data Loss...I don't have any other memory big enough to move all 400 gigs to be able to format it under fat32...if not, is it possible to use the 90GB free as a 2nd partition under Fat32? i just do not want to lose the data i have.

questions on the side:
- is it better to use an External HDD or to Upgrade the PS3's internal?

-What are the causes of YLOD and RLOD? just want to be aware and try my best to prevent these. any symptoms before getting em?

thanks guys, all help is appreciated.

There are a few tools to revert NTFS drives to FAT32, but they are generaly not very relabile, and there are a lot of issues, especialy if you have any files over 4GB (FAT32 cannot support such files).

You can also resize the drive to make room for a FAT32 partition, but I think that the PS3 might have issues with this. I guess you could do it in stages, shrinking 90GB at a time, copying files over, then shrinking 90GB more, untill the whole disk is FAT32.

"is it better to use an External HDD or to Upgrade the PS3's internal?"
The internal is far more usefull, and supports files over 4GB. The external is nice because it can plug right into a pc's USB port, with no need for a media server/HTTP server.

Many causes, but mostly these problems are caused by heat, or by repeated heating and cooling. Both issues can be adressed by running the fan at full speed. Also, you might consider doing a heatsink upgrade on the memory and chipset...the stock cooling on these is terrible. Oh, and while you are in there, carefully apply a thin layer on arctic silver 5 on the RSX and Cell chips (the two big ones).

Depending on your windows version, you might be able to do it all through the "Computer management" link found in the "Administrative Tools" folder. If you have an older version of windows, or you have a lower-end version of windows, then you could try a free utility such as Easeus Partition Master.

BTW...you should be affraid of data loss, and not just because of these procedures. Hard drives fail all the time, and external hard drives fail a lot more than internal ones. These drives are not intended for file storage...even if that is how they sold it to you...USB hard drives are just oversized flash drives with a bunch of moving parts to break. If you want data security, you either need to keep 2 copies of everything on 2 seperate drives, or you need to get a RAID setup, or you need to get offsite backup (not ideal for larger files).

yah i know....you guys think i should just back it up on Cd's/Dvd's for bigger files? i just wanted the convenience of it being readable on the PS3, and all in one crack...not a bunch of different CD's.
