You will find a very strong following here for the Verbatim. I will say that as a test and while I was learning I did buy a 25 pack of the memorex and I was able to burn all 25 of them with no issues at all. I even did it at 8x speed. Now the downfall is that people say that the dye is not as good causing the laser to work harder and cause early failure. I can not answer to that as I am new and have not had any issues at all.

even if it were to fail prematurely with the price difference between verbs and memorex you could buy a new drive after like two spindles with the money you save

I use Verbs and Philips brands with no troubles. The Philips are half the price and so far no coasters or bad lasers.

I use Aone DL DVD's, they have done me proud over the last 2 years and any coasters have been down to operator error not the DVD's quality. On the plus side they are also full face printable :)

So far I have onlt trusted Verbatim's and Memorex 2nd (as some memorex are manufactured with the same dye code as Verbatim's)
I also tried a brand called Nexxtech, they suck.. pure coasters.

Myself and everyone I know uses Memorex so well over a thousand burns with no issues. I see that TDK is now price the same as Memorex so I might try them depending on who has free shipping.

Verbs and arita here, the arita discs are really good, not one bad burn in 2 and a half years.

I just picked up a 25 pack of Arita's for £12 from my local shop which compared to the £27 that i was paying for 25 Verb's is quite a saving indeed!!!
Just burned Dante's Inferno on 6x and been playing for over an hour with no problems whatsoever so looks to me like i wont be buying verbs again anytime soon !!
Im burning Bioshock 2 now on an Arita so will update on how that plays!

I would not normally keep a thread like this living, but after my earlier post I finally had my first bad burn on a Memorex.... Guess I should have kept my mouth shut...haha.. karma I guess. But it is still not bad out of 30 and I have one bad burn. Now keep in mind that I did just finish ripping about 30 dvd's over to .vobs for my xbox to play and downloading 14 gig without a reboot. I rebooted and the next one went without a hitch as normal....

Just to update the Bioshock 2 that a burnt on an arita works flawlessly!
Ordered 25 Aone plus from ebay for £9 so just give them a try too .
Looks to me like the inferior discs are standing up well to the mighty verbs!

If you install all games to the hd, then maybe it might be okay but for the small difference in price, verbatim should be used. Buy them in bulk online to get them as cheap as possible. Should work out $2 a game or less (excluding delivery fixed cost).
Edit:
Maybe I'm, wrong. It seems other brands do work well and are significantly cheaper. Its the effect they have on the drive's laser that would concern me but good to see you experimenting. Verbatim discs will come down in price with more people turning to the competition so its all good. Having said that, these discs are a small price to pay for free games :).

I've been using that, and so far it's all success, though I do use the discs only to write to harddrive (as another forumite have mentioned above), so I can't testify to long-term-read usage. Still, I'd recommend going with write-to-harddrive route. Everyone have said it's faster and quieter (you'd still need to insert DVD, I guess as a security check).
