I had a xbox 360 with 3 red lights i have done a xclamp fix works ok now will play normal dvds (movies) but when i insert a game it comes play dvd and loads a xbox screen and thats it.
So i thought drive laser is breaking as i read on internet the laser cant power up to play dual layer dvds.
I bought another drive of ebay (used) was suppose to be fully working change the large board over today in the drive same problem.
Would you say drive problem with both? Before i go and get a new drive? Or how hard is it to change the laser?

Thought i can do it this way instead of flashing.
It sounds to me like you tried to flash your original board and didn't do it correctly. Specifically, you did not include your drive key in the flash.
So yes, if that is indeed the case, you need to reflash your drive with the correct drive key in place and it will then work.
The laser could also be at fault, like you say. However, you have not answered my question of whether or not a regular DVD will play in the drive. If a regular DVD plays, it's probably the drive key. If it won't play, and original games won't play, the it is probably the laser.

In order to tell if it is flashed, or flashed properly, you just hook the drive up to a SATA cable on your PC and power it with the 360. Then you use software to read the drive's firmware.
Did the 360 read games before it was RROD? Or did you buy a RROD 360 and now it won't play games?
I really want to help, but the lack of detail you're providing makes it difficult.

Alright, in that case, it most certainly is the drive key. You need to dump the firmware of the drive and make sure that is the case.
If it is the case, and it probably is, the only way you can get the DVD key and thus ever actually use the DVD drive is by doing the JTAG hack and dumping your motherboard's flash memory.
If the drive key is present when you dump the DVD drive's flash then you either have a wrong key or, hopefully, a bad laser. If there was indeed a key present in the firmware dump, the only way to tell the difference would be to replace the laser lens and see if that fixed it.
Chances are 99% for a bad or non-existent drive key on your DVD drive.
The bad news is that it would be a pain in the ass to do the NAND-reading/JTAG hack, which you would need to do in order to fix it. The good news is that once you've done this, if your system has not been updated since last summer via games or Xbox Live, it opens up a lot of great options to you with your 360 if you are willing to put in the work.
