I plan on modding a hitachixbox 360 this wk. I plan to mod it with a pci card and I have heard that modding hitachi drives are somewhat difficult than the TS drives. I was wondering if it would be easier to mod the TS and then spoof the drive to hitachi after I mod it so it will be playable by the hitachi xbox. thanks for any help.
You need to dump the key from the Hitachi anyway, so all of the additional effort needs to be done whether you spoof or not. In this case, spoofing would be unnecessary.
Although Hitachi drives are much maligned, there are really only two downsides to them-- 1) they can be tricky to put into vendor mode if you don't have prior experience, and, the big one, #2) they will brick if a flash (not a dump) goes bad.
All you need to do is use Jungle Flasher and the 'unlock audio CD' to put the drive into 'mode B', or vendor mode. It's simple, but if you have questions, consult the JF tutorial. This is for a v79 drive.
Once you have the drive in vendor mode, you can dump the firmware from the drive using Jungle Flasher. Make sure you save it somewhere safe, of course.
With the firmware dump being loaded as the source, load iX 1.51 (latest for Hitachi) as your target firmware, 'spoof' your drive key to the target firmware and save the modified firmware .bin file somewhere easy to get at.
I do not recommend using JF to flash the firmware on a Hitachi, however. I have had more success with FirmwareToolbox than with Jungle Flasher to flash Hitachi firmware. The reason being that Jungle Flasher can be pretty unstable and crash sometimes, which will brick your Hitachi drive on a flash. DosFlash32 would probably work better than JF as well. JF's ease of use and long feature list are nice, but it's stability can be finnicky.

so let me make sure I'm clear on this. 1st of all, I can use jungleflasher to get the dvd key off my original drive (i plan to buy another drive to flash so I can keep my original and have a modded drive as well) and it will not/can not brick my drive. 2nd of all since jungleflasher can crash, I would need to use firmwaretoolbox instead to flash. am I following this correctly?

Yep, that's all correct. If you are set on spoofing a 2nd drive, here is how to do it:
Just load your original firmware dump from the Hitachi drive as source firmware in Jungle Flasher, and load the iXtreme firmware for your secondary drive as the target firmware. So, for instance, if you use the Samsung drive, you would load the latest firmware for Samsung. I am not sure what that firmware would be.
Hit 'spoof source to target' to copy the DVD key to the target firmware and disguise the drive as a Hitachi. Now just flash the firmware and you will be set.

ok so my next question is if I were spoofing a dvd drive (samsung) would I need to put it in the samsung xbox or the hitachi xbox or does it even matter which one?
"Spoof" basically means "fake", so you just have to fake any drive as the original. So whatever the original drive in the machine was, you have to spoof any replacement drive to look like the original drive to the 360.
Also, just thought that you should know, that supposedly spoofing is more dangerous in terms of bans. Of course, these days, I am not sure anyone is safe from a ban.

thanls for the info. about being banned for spoofing. so can I spoof a samsung drive to think it is a hitachi in any kind of xbox or does the drive have to be in the xbox that I am trying to spoof it to work in?
