First of all i just wanna say this is my first ever post so bare with me if im not quite doing things right.

Ok my question is can you link an external hard drive to your PS3 and use it as a media center to play films ect. straight from the external hard drive through to your tv?

I was recently going to buy a media center after seeing a friend of mine with one. Saves all the hassle of constantly changing dvd's (yes i know that sounds lazy!) I already had an external hard drive so starting converting my films with mkv convertor with the intention of purchasing a media center.

However, my friend had heard i could use my ps3 to do the same job but wasnt sure how so i thought if its possibe it will save money and another gadjit taking up valuable space around my tv.

any thoughts or answers will be much appreciated!

oh and ive read a couple of posts on this site already and i get the feeling im a proper newb so if you could explain in really simple terms that would be awsome. cheers!

PS3 won't do MKV, but it can still make a nice media center. You can rip both DVDs and BluRays to work with the PS3 without any quality loss. However, you will need a PC to do all the conversions. External drives on the PS3 are not great because the file size is limited to 4GB...less than the average DVD size, and far less than a bluray size. You can only upgrade the internal to 750GB since it is a laptop hard drive, but you can get an adapter that lets you use larger desktop hard drives with it. I believe you can even use a hardware port multiplier with several hard drives, allowing for a theoretical 10TB or more of storage space. As for getting those files over 4GB onto the drive when you can't use external drives to do it, you will have to setup a HTTP server on a PC, then make a mini website with links to each of the files, then download them like any other video.
