I have made many backups that play on my stand alone DVD player, and on my wife's pc running XP Pro, but my machine says "no disk" when I insert on of them. The iso files play perfectly with DVD Shrink and burning with Nero 6.3 seems to work well. I have read many forums and done searches but the suggestions thus far have not solved the problem. I wonder if one of the programs I tried changed the DMA or other windows settings (I have XP Home ed on my machine with AMD 2400 MHz 1GB RAM). Anyone else run into this?

What kind of media are you using? I ask this because it sounds to me as if it is bad media that is causing that problem. Most DVD burners don't read a DVD as well as a regular DVD drive or Standalone player will.
Try running scandisk on Nero CD/DVD speed on the computer that will read the disk and make sure it is not the disks that are causing the problem before looking further into problems with the burner.
I had this problem when I got my first burner. I never figured out what the problem was, but I suspect it was some kind of driver conflict as XP seems to have more than its share of them. My solution at the time was to do all my DVD backups with Windows 2000, which I already had on that PC, but I was going to reinstall XP to see if it solved the problem. Unfortunately, that PC was taken out by a lightning strike and I never had the chance to find out. Actually it was fortunate for me, because in order to replace it with a computer with all the same options (512MB RAM, -R burner, 80GB hard drive) the insurance company ended up replacing it with a much better PC (I got a P4 2.4GHz with a pretty good capture card to replace a Duron 1GHz without one), but I still would have liked to have found out what the actual problem was.
I have been using some cheap no name brand DVDs as well as some TDK and both have given me the same problem. When you say, "Try running scandisk on Nero CD/DVD speed ", are you referring to the scandisk program built into windows or is this part of Nero 6.3. Are you referring to the information tool section of Nero that gathers info about ASPI settings, etc?
You want to run this program and open the scandisk in the extra tab and then check the box that says surface scan then press start. Do this all with one of the burned DVD's in the drive on the computer that will actually read the DVD.
Hi folks. Thanks for the great suggestions. As I am writing, I am doing the suggested surface scan. So far no bad sectors. Also, I changed my technique a bit. I created a new iso from the earlier of one of the movies that would not read on my burner. But, this time I checked the box about sending output to DVD Decrypter for burning, and I also told it to break up the VOBs into 1 GB chunks. DVD Decrypter actually spit out a report that reminded me that one of my logical drives was using a FAT 32 file system and did not support files over 4 GB in size. So, just to be safe I split it up. Then I got a message saying that my ASPI settings were wrong and that I needed to install ASPI or choose a different interface, so I chose SPTI. (I had previously installed ASPI but had problems so I renamed all the WNASPI32.DLL files.) Anyhow, using the above settings, I was able to write a DVD flawlessly, and it reads perfectly on my burner! Oh, yes, one other thing...I unchecked the box in DVD Shrink that says "Run analysis and backup in low priority mode to improve multitasking", so that it would have a higher priority and not be messed up by other tasks going on in the background. I probably should have only made one change at a time to see what really was the culprit, but all of what I did has potential benefit, I think. My best guess is that the ASPI issue was the big one, although I am not sure if the file size is a know problem or not.

I would agree that the ASPI issue was probably causing your problem. Don't worry about the length of the post. More detail is always better. As you said, it's important to be able to search for the solutions. Otherwise all we'd have is a list of problems, and most of the people who come here have plenty of those. ;)
