Hi,
I have a friend who wants his xbox modding, but he will be coming a long way on public transport carrying his xbox.

The MFU date is 2009-07-15

He says he knows the drive version is 83850C but doesnt know which version. (from 360 drives.com or something)

The reason I am asking is because i do not have the switch, v2 of the probe or any soldering kit and can only flash the 8-series which doesnt require this.

Does anyone know whether this would be the software only version or not? As I wouldnt want to have him travel a long way here, then spend my time opening the box only to tell him I cant do it!

Thanks for your time.

Any version manufactured in July of 2009 or earlier should have the v1.

no guarantees, bit it is very likely you won't need anything additional to flash his drive.

Even if it is version 1 of the 83850c, you still need to be doing full firmware dumps anyway. You can make your own probe or get the Xtractor pro + Vampire/CK3 + Probe2. The full firmware dump contains unique laser calibration data.

Are you sure? last time i did a 83850v1 i got the key.bin inquiry.bin identify.bin and serial.bin as well as dummy.bin. Not sure what you mean by full dump?

Thanks.

EDIT: I looked into it and now know what you mean. It is uncertain whether this alters the safety of those on live right? I mean, theres nothing really written about it in any of the 7xxx tutorials or anything as of yet from what ive seen? I myself have 1 of my xboxs running a 74850 with LT on live but i havent used the full dump method =\

Also, wouldnt TJ have mentioned it to do with live safety upon LT release or something ? idk.. im no pro ^^

If you have a 74850c or a version 1 83850c, the old methods will not pick up the unique laser calibration data. Whether or not it is need to be "Live Safe", you should be doing full firmware dumps anyways since it is now available. Once you erase your firmware, you can't ever get it back. Using old methods like probing the R707 for the 74850c or LO83info for the version 1 83850c are only getting you your key, inquiry, identify, serial data, and dummy bin. Who knows, maybe in the future the firmware team may find something new within the LiteOn firmware that is required to be spoofed to iX LT.

All and all, since full firmware dumps are available, you should be doing it if you are going to mod a LiteOn drive.

Here is a tutorial to show you a way to dump full LiteOn firmware. Full firmware dump LiteOn

C4eva stated that the laser calibration data is not specifically accessed by the firmware but may be used by other processes. So it was included for correctiveness.

Ok cool, thank you for that info.

I get where youre coming from, and ill look into getting the tools to do this just incase. The link you sent is very informative, thanks.

Do you have any tips for anyone whos not done this kind of stuff with electronics before?

Also, if youre from the UK - what kind of shops sell the trace repair pen, somwhere like Maplin right? What kind of price are they running at roughly?

Ill need to get the v2probe instead of the vampire.

EDIT: Also, the cut nearer the top of the picture, does it close off the entire line or do you only do the cut like the yellow line you have shown, i.e. does the cut come from the bottom line to the top line, or is there still a small gap? Hard to see from the bottom pic.

Sorry, I'm not from the UK so I can't help there. Here is also another good method from bhetrick if you or someone you know is hand at soldering.

If you decide to solder, you'll need to follow bhetricks pictures. If you use a homemade probe or the Vampire/Probe2, you'll need to follow the guide I linked.

Does the lt switch method give a full firmware dump?
