Finfan...
I am considering purchasing the R200 printer to be able to print directly to printable DVD's and CD's, have been using labels up to now but want to avoid that extra step of the label hassle and possible unbalance problem...

My question and main concern is, how well do the pictures look on the finished product, and MOST importantly, any problems with the ink smudging or smearing on the disk?

And, approx how long do you recommend letting the disk dry before handling it?

And, in your experience, have you tried matte white versus gloss white or matte silver printable disks?

Your experience would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks...

hello, first the pics you print on the dvd and cd is absolutely great. depending on the quality of the downloaded pic of course. i mean this printer is totally unbeleivable. i also print photos and have never had a better printer for quality. now for the matte versus glossy i dont know how glossy looks but why would you go glossy anyway if your printing over it?? and stay away from silver printable they dont print nearly as perfectly as the white printable. and i wait about 2 to 3 mins before handling them and have not had a smudge or smear yet. hop this helps

2 - 3 minutes before handling them is ok, but you should let them dry over night before they are completely dry.

I just came upon this site just by surfing.

I'm considering purchasing an Epson R200 solely because I do a fair about of DVD burning and would like to do away with the adhesive labels that I'm presently using.

My question is: Is the cd/dvd software that comes with the R200 easy or difficult to learn? I"m on the brink of purchasing the R200, but am hesitant about learning the software.

I was hoping to get a demonstration on the R200, but so far I cant find any dealer that is willing to do so.

If I get any positive advice from any of you subscribers, I'll go ahead and order one.

Thanks

Just got this yesterday, have printed on 5 printable DVD's so far. Took about 10 minutes get the printer set up and going. I do recommend printing out the test pattern for printing on CD\DVD's first tho(follow the directions in the booklet). I printed my first one and saw it did need a very small corection. Ran the test pattern, made the metric measurements, (you will need a metric ruler for mm) made the evry small adjustment and all 4 since then have been dead center.
The software is extremely easy to use and making lighten or darken adjustments to the image is very easy. I also have Sure Thing Labeler software and the Epson software for disk printing is much easier to use.
I had a lot of questions\concerns about the R200 before I bought it but I'm glad I made the plunge.
Just make sure you have ink jet printable disks tho.
Also, it is very easy to change the inside diameter to print on full face printable disks.
The quality is awesome.
I finally got around to printing some regular photos and I was very impressed with that output also.
For $99 this is the best thing going for photo quality and direct CD\DVD printing. Love the seperate ink tanks, six colors. It's also relatively quiet and the speed is not too bad when in high quality photo mode. Fast print all black is very fast.
As others have suggested, allow the disk to dry for several minutes before attempting to handle, then put in a case or somewhere safe, you can handle OK after a few minutes (easy does it, do not rub your finger across it) it will take about 24 hours to completely dry.

I've also considered getting the r200 for printable DVDs. It uses the Epson Durabrite ink which doesn't smudge so easily. My only problem with it was that the accompanying software doesn't allow you to use full face discs according to Epson tech support UK.

VaderK: "Also, it is very easy to change the inside diameter to print on full face printable disks".

If I knew I could do this simply and cheaply I think I'd get one straight away. Any help on that would be appreciated!

very simple, launch the Epson Print CD software, then click on File\Inner Outer Diameter Settings, on this window set it up for full face disk by selecting custom CD and set the inner diameter to be 25mm and leave the outer at 116mm. Then save it in File\Save As.... Next time you have a full face cd\dvd just do a File\Open and select the file you saved.... easy.

Certainly sounds easy enough! Can't see why the guy at tech support didn't know that. Do you think maybe the software is different over here in the UK? Wouldn't have thought so, but it would be just my luck to get one and find it was.
Think I'll give them a bell back and tell them how to use their own product!

Cheers Vader.

Antoninus,
Just checked my software on the "About" tab under Help. it is showing as

Epson Print CD version 1.20A

Don't know what version the bundle is on the units sold over on the other side of the pond.... best of luck and hope that helps, it really is a great printer for the cost !!

Just got off the horn to an entirely different guy at Epson UK who has completely rubbished what his mate told me! Apparently it's the same bundled software worldwide, and ALL R200s will come with Print CD Version 1.20, which means it will print full face discs, out of the box.

He naturally understood my distrust of this contradictory advice though, and directed me to a zip file on the russian epson site(nyet I hear you say!) which was a download for the full version of Print CD v1.20E. Here it is if anyone ever needs it:

http://support.epson.ru/upload/drivertypes/000781/pricd_12ae.zip

Just installed it and am happy to say I can now print onto full face discs. Well, just as soon as I take delivery of the printer itself!

I will post again when I have some results.

Many thanks again...

Finally got round to getting the printer, and managed to get hold of a steady supply of full face discs (not as easy as it sounds over here in the UK), and I have to say that the results are stunning! I am very impressed with the quality, but also the ease with which you can obtain it. It really is a breeze to set up. If anyone out there is undecided about getting this printer, don't be. Go out and get one, you won't regret it. You won't even have to pay as much as I did if you're in the US. Wish I'd been able to get it for $99!

I bought the Epson R200 a couple weeks ago and it is driving me totally nuts. I get it to print on about 5 dvds or so and then the thing won't do any more. It keeps spitting the tray out saying it's not set properly. After countless times of trying and it spitting it out every time and refusing to print on them, I got sick of it and took it back to Best Buy figuring I just had a defective printer and got a replacement.

And would you believe it, the same damn thing with the replacement. It printed about 5 dvds and now refuses to print on any more. I doesn't matter how perfectly the tray is aligned with the arrow or whatever, it just spits it out every time. I'm gonna call Epson Support and if they can't figure out the problem I'm taking this one back and never buying anything Epson again.

But I see all these great reviews on it and I'm just wondering if the local Best Buy just got a bunch of defective ones cause there is no way I'm not setting that tray properly. You'd think after 40 tries, at least one of them it would be set up OK especially after working for the first 5 dvds or so.

When I first used it and correctly lined up the arrows as per the instructions, the tray would spit out a good few times as you describe, so I started pushing it in further until the transparent plastic strip at the leading edge actually nudges under the rollers inside the printer. You can easily see this if you lift the top cover. Haven't had any problems since then. It leaves the arrows approximately 7-8mm out of alignment, but this doesn't affect the actual print alignment as the printer pulls the tray in and out a couple of times to calibrate the position anyway. Hope that?s all the problem is!

Hi
I'm thinking of picking up a epson r200.
I was wondering if the sofware has anything to make dvd case covers or do you need a seperate program for that?

The printer doesn't appear to ship with any software for that, but you don't really need it. You can just use something like Paint Shop Pro and create a new image 273mm x 183mm, add the artwork, print as normal, then use a guillotine (or scissors if you've got the patience!) to crop it.

If you're backing up an existing cover just scan it at whatever resolution you want then resize the image to the above measurements and print.

I've had excellent results using this method, though no doubt there's plenty of other ways equally effective!

Well thanks for the suggestion, but I'd already taken it back today. The guys at Epson emailed me and one of their tips was to make sure there was at least 3 inches of space behind the printer. I don't recall seeing that in the instructions, does the tray come out a slot in the back or what? Why would that matter? Oh well. I was so mad with it I'd already taken it back.

If I ever get the nerve to go buy this printer for a 3rd time I'll be sure to try these tips out but I think I'll wait till Canon comes out with one in the U.S. cause I have bad vibes now with Epson. Thanks anyways though

The tray that holds the disc DOES come out the back of the printer - but I can't say I've ever noticed it extend any further out the back than the sheet feeder does when fully opened.

Did you have the printer on a trolley or something which maybe had a lip or raised edge at the back ? If so, maybe it was fouling on that. Or the mains cable, or the USB lead... ?

Yes, the tray does go in and will extend slightly out the back, you need to keep at least 3 to 4 inches clear behind the printer, if it encounters resistance it will spit it back out rather than force it which will definately break it as in strip the gears....

I had that problem once, I had been dusting the shelf the printer is on and I accidently moved the USB cable in the back and didn't realize it. After spitting out a few times I just happened to look in the back when I ran one thru and sure enough, it was hitting the USB cable!

I moved the cable out of the way and all was working fine again!... You are right, the instructions should refer to keeping the back area clear of the cables, a wall, or anything else.... but it doesn't.

As for the question on making cover art, I use Sure Thing Labeler Deluxe and I print on the NEATO labels designed for CD cases and the ones for the DVD cases are awesome!

For the new style "slim" DVD cases I just created a template in Word (WordPerfect works too) where I measured out the case insert then created a 3 column, 1 row table to the sizes I wanted.... then locked the size of the table so it won't change...

Import graphics for the front part (3rd column area with margins inside the cell set to "zero" on top, bottom and sides...., rotate the text in the middle cell\column for the spine text Title and put text in the first column for the back "description".... went to Sams' Club and bought a box of glossy photo paper (no name stuff but excellent results)... 100 in the box for $20 and they look great !!!

I left a thin line as a border around the entire table so it is easy to cut out (I removed the interior lines that seperat the columns inside the table....

Hope that helps....

This is an awesome printer

Forgot to mention, if you create the table, first set the paper layout to be landscape instead of portrait first befor you create the template so it will fit one sheet..... then save the template and it will always be ready for the next layout. Took a little while to get it just right but it was well worth the hour or so it took to create it for use with the "Slim" DVD cases for the inserts....

After reading all of this stuff about keeping some space behind the printer I'm thinking more and more that that was probably the problem as I did have it close to a dresser and the USB cable was contorted to fit through a hole that was behind the printer. Now I'm tempted to go buy the damn thing again. Thanks guys.

Hi!

I too have been trying all night to get a DVD printed using my `new outta the boz today' R210. The `DVD Tray Not Set' error was coming up again, and again.

It was I think that the tray was hitting the wall behind the printer. But the instructions could be a little more clear and `Not Set' doesn't give me much to go on!

But anyway, I've done 1 test of a DVD label and 1 test of a 4x6 photo on their premium paper and the quality is unreal.

So yes, Favre4, I that probably was the problem with yours too.

Now if I can just get my DVDs I write to play in my DVD player!

See ya
Ernie

Just want to add my voice to the others about dvd tray - hyper finicky thing. Followed instructions religiously: no go. Tray went in and walked right back out.

Epson sent another. This time, tray wouldn't even go in. (Have I mentioned I followed the software/arrows/loading instructions neurotically?)

Printer is great for the price for consumer-level photos but Epson HAS to solve this damn DVD tray thing.
