Hey there,

I've scouted online and on this site and havent found any conclusions for my isssue, since it's pretty specific.

I'm active duty military staying in a hotel with a few other servicemembers and we have 360s that we play online while we're staying here for a few months. We can all play on line at the same time without any issues, but when we try to connect to each other to play or to talk in party chat, we get network errors and are unable to do so. This is a major downer and I was hoping there was something i could do on my end to alleviate this problem. I know most people who have this issue are on home networks, and they can just change their network settings to allow for multiple systems without issue, but since we're restricted to a hotel, and I cant get access to, or request changes to the network, I was hoping there was something simpler I can do, such as possibly changing my IP address to something outside of the network, or changing my gateway. I'm not sure if this will do anything or even work, but since there isnt much you can configure from xbox network settings, i figured anything i could do was better than nothing.

I'm fairly sure its a conflict between sending packets to two xboxes within the network but im no expert on the matter. any help would be greatly appreciated

I can think of three possible options here. The main problem is that the network firewall is probably super strict, and so accepting outside connections is flaky.

Option 1, which may or may not work, would be to have everybody in the hotel connect wirelessly to a local wireless router. This may or may not be feasible based on the size of your hotel and proximity of people. My logic here is that since everybody is on the same LAN, connections may be better, even across the internet.

Option 2 would be to have everybody connect to an outside server, via VPN for instance. You could do this on your laptop and run the 360 through internet connection sharing. The difficult thing would be getting access to a VPN server that would route your 360 traffic. One possible way would be to have a buddy back in the states that has fiber internet set up a VPN server on a host computer in his house.

Option 3, probably the best option, would be to find an outside source of internet access. If you could get access to local broadband internet access, perhaps from a store or home nearby, you could share it out to the people in the hotel. Perhaps not very feasible, unfortunately.

I'm not sure any of the options are really worth the trouble of going through. Maybe somebody else out there has a better idea.

As for the connecting to the local wireless router, neither of us have the wireless adapter, we both connect via ethernet. I forgot to mention that.

Other than that there arent really any other viable sources of internet nearby

as for the VPN, how would that be set up? for instance, getting the xboxs configured to work with the VPN? I havent had much experience with that.

We're switching hotels within the next few days. Unless I can find a user end solution, i just have to cross my fingers that the next hotel is a little more lax with their settings

Every Xbox doesn't need a wireless adapter as long as everybody has a laptop. The 360 would get its internet connection through the PC through internet connection sharing in Windows. The laptop itself would connect to the local wireless network, which you could bring with you from place to place. So only your laptop would need a wireless connection, not your 360.

The VPN/proxy would work by routing all of your internet traffic through a different, hopefully very high speed, very low latency outside server that has looser settings than your home server. This can be accomplished by running VPN or proxy software on the home fiber server back in Europe or the US, then using your PC to connect to that server and route all of it's traffic through it, and then finally running your 360 through the internet connection of that laptop. The closer the proxy server was to you, the better the ping would be.

Hopefully the next place does have more lax settings. All of the proposed solutions are pretty intense and/or iffy.

I looked into random free VPNs and i know its not the best option for live playing, but i'm having trouble visualizing how to set it up.

I would have to connect the xbox to my laptop via ethernet (would that need to be a crossover or is rj45 fine?) but what about the laptop having the connection? I could possibly connect the laptop wirelessly as there is a signal here, but we've found that the ethernet is much faster, so we always hardwire our connections.

I've looked over tutorials for sharing a pc connection with the xbox, i just dont think my signal is strong enough in my end of the hotel.

I do have a router though. Would creating a private network in my room and connecting to that wirelessly through the pc, and THEN sharing to my xbox work?
