Looks like NA will be the last regieon to get PlayTV...in fact sony has taken so long to get us this device, I have bought other hardware and probably would not have any use for this anyway.

It will be recording broadcasts, so It seems will be MPEG-2 TS(mpeg-2 with AAC).Not sure in what format will record the game play...

I doubt it will let you record gameplay. As for recording the broadcasts, MPEG-2 would be a terrible choice. There are plenty of free MPEG-4 codecs that the PS3 already supports...and the required disk space for FullHD MPEG-2 recordings is huge.

You live in Japan? Sony hasn't made any mention of making versions of this device for any other country.

It looks like a MPEG-2 video stream w/ 5.1 channel audio as it says 1 hour = ~6GB HDD space. They don't say what the file container format is, though. It also converts full HD recordings to a smaller one for PSP use (~250MB/hr) and will even record while playing most PS3 games.

you can get a dvd recorder with built in DVR in the UK for as little as £50 how is this a steal, it has less functionality at more than double the cost.

hat's what I read, Mpeg-2 TS (mpeg-2 video with AAC, about 6GB for one hour of recording for HD). I guess all it does is record it on the fly, not do any conversion. The HDD space will be exhausted in no time.

No, but I'd like a muffin or a piece of toast...However, for the price, I don't find the DVR thinggie to be a super deal either, when cheaper devices are available...

So in order to us it we need a HDMI/ect to DTV transceiver that flags everything as ok...I hope we see it come out would be an awesome device.

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Lets renegotiate them.

it's sony that is pushing for the broadcast flag to be introduced in every country.

they don't want people to be able to have a modern day vcr collection, more hypocrisy from sony if you know the vcr recording history, as they want you to purchase the over priced blu-ray.

in the UK they are even trying to get the BBC to use DRM by threatening them with removing content.

since the BBC is publicly funded they are not allowed to introduce any DRM that can block us from viewing it on our generic DVB set top boxes that at the moment do not require a licence to be built but if the DRM is introduced every box will need authorisation from the MPAA whom are, sony, warner, disney & fox.
