Samsung continues to outpace TV rivals

article published on 18 February, 2010

South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung Electronics Co. is enjoying growth spurred by sharp rises in sales of its flat-panel televisions. In 2006, Samsung overtook Sony as the biggest seller of television sets in the world. Since that time, the company has watched its TV business almost double in size. It has an advantage in that it constructed its own manufacturing base instead ... [ read the full article ]

Not surprised by this. They're TV sets are high quality and similar to the Sony ones but cost a little less. One of the main reasons why I bought a Samsung LCD over one of the Sony Bravias.

I agree that Samsung's quality exceeds most competitors, but ive been hearing reports about defective parts, in particular the power supply, making a buzzing noise and eventually causing the tv to not come on or a bad picture. It has been mentioned that the smaller tvs mainly 26" and some 32" models had it. Has anybody in Afterdawnland heard of this? Cause this is one of the main reasons why i didnt buy a 32" Samsung. I ove Samsung, but im leary of even purchasing. I bought a lg instead and so far so good. - BLUEBOY

The buzz comes from the choppr transformer in the PSU .. most likely down to faulty manufacture (loose laminations in the core or wobbly windings). I guess if you have a buzzer and you know what you are doing you could pot the thing in epoxy and forget about it buzzing (old trick with wound components that buzz and rattle) The other real problem is with the quality of some of the caps used in the PSU.. Again they usually give some indication they are going to fail big time before they do.. If I ever happen across a sammy it's pretty safe to say I will replace any black cased caps in the PSU as a matter of policy before running it.

Other than those small problems they are fine sets with (imho) the best display of any lcd tv's I have seen.

I remember the good old days when Samsung were regarded as bottom end far east junk makers.. cheap plastic crap bought by idiots.. I think that and then I look at my 1985 samsung portable tv with it's av inputs and remote which lives in the bedroom and runs on and on and on and on quietly playing my bed time dvd (from my mid 90's Dansai.. another purveyor of so called crap.. dvd player) and getting left on all night long after the "respected" branded gear of the same era has gone to landfill.

The 4, caps on the power supply are rated at 10v and tend to fail. They are too small. If they fail, replace them with 20v to 25v rated caps. Don?t remember the uf size off hand.

I always hear good reviews about Samsung tv's but the brand has never failed to let me down in the past so I would be wary of buying a tv by them, years ago we had a samsung crt which died a premature death, then a few years later I had a sammy dvd player (back when dvd players were a new thing and cost loads) which I returned to the store a few days after buying it cos it failed, ive had problematic samsung phones, and even the simple cdr made by samsung failed (burned fine but then struggled to read, even on a pc dvd rom drive).

So unless they have 'upped their game' on reliability i will stick with Sony bravia's!!!!

I have owned a 32" Samsung LCD tv for almost 3 years. It's a 1080I model. I have never had any problems with this TV. There are NO humming sounds or other problems with the set. The main reason I bought a Samsung was the features that other companies do not offer. The main feature is the ability to fine tune any color. The picture still looks fantastic after many hours of use. My TV comes on at 6:00am and stays on until about 11:00pm EVERY DAY. That's a lot of use.
