I read somewhere about codecs but i am not really sure what ones to download and are the safe. thanks
Codecs are used by the computer to read the video/audio files. As a really ill-fitting analogy, think of them as dictionaries your computer uses to translate different types of video/audio data into what you see/hear.
What's going on with the PS3 is that for the files that have no audio, the PS3 simply doesn't recognize the audio format. Maybe it doesn't have the right codec, maybe the codec settings are off, something. The same principle applies to files with audio but no video. Whatever it is, it's a relatively easy fix.
You just have to "change" or convert the audio/video streams into something the PS3 recognizes. There are many, many programs that allow you to do this.
Personally, I would split the file into its audio and video portions, and convert each separately (a program called eac3to for the audio, and MeGUI or VirtualDubMod for the video), then re-combine them.
As far as the codecs go, they're only required on your PC because it doesn't come with the more popular ones (like DivX, Xvid, h264, etc. for video, and Ogg, RealMedia, etc. for audio) pre-installed. You'll have to manually download and install those onto your PC. The PS3 already has some installed, and more are added through the firmware updates.
