So barely 4 days after the 3 months warranty ends on my 60gb refurb I'm starting to get Blu-ray reading problems.
I'll explain what happens because I'm baffled. It will read CD's, DVD's and ps2 games fine but when i go to put a game in it will spin up show the reading icon in the corner but won't appear on the xmb.

I thought originally the laser was dead but the last 2 days I've been trying again and most of the time it won't read but occasionally it will read and i can play absolutely fine, the game never crashes, there's no artifacts on the screen, Draw distance is normal, no skipping or anything!
For example i was playing uncharted 2 yesterday for at least 3 hours with no problems, I've recently tried fallout 3 as well and when it does read it plays perfect and will do for hours.
Although if i turn the ps3 off (standby) then put it back on the disc icon disappears from the xmb.

I thought it may have been a dirty laser lens so i opened it up and cleaned the laser with some isopropyl alcohol, that made no difference and it will only read when it want's to.
I tried restoring the file system through the recovery menu and it did give me and error and apparently fix the issue but the same thing happens with blu-rays. Although I've tried the file system fix a couple of times now and each time it gives me an error even though it said it was fixed the 1st time i did it.

I'm going to put the original 60gb hard drive back in because of the weird file system. see if that does anything.

Just wanted to get some views before i buy a new laser. Anyone with a phat ps3 that's came across the same thing when their lasers died? Intermittent reading of discs?
I would think that if a lasers dead, it's dead and won't read what so ever.

60 GB refurbished sent up red flags for me, sounds like your laser is on its last leg- replace it- good thing you dont get any artifacts that would be much worse. Unfortunately the prices for replacements are pretty high right now last i checked i would get them for 49.99 a while back but its up to like 80 now.... i would advise against buying them off ebay unless its an american seller as well so if its a bad quality laser returns will be much simpler and less expensive than with an asian based seller.

It's just wierd since i can play perfectly when it works, and i've been doing so since it stopped reading.
I'm in the UK anyways but i can get an original laser and deck for around £50.
ah well i'll replace it when it actually dies.

Im having the exact same problem as the OP, once my PS3 reads the BD it will play for hours but if I turn off the sysyem or switch disks it will not read them anymore. So my question is, is this a symptom of a laser going south or more serious like the control card?

BTW, it will play DVD/CD's every time.

Update: It was a dirty lens that caused mine to not read disks every time. I cleaned the lens with rubbing alcohol and it has worked every time for the last few days so Im going to assume it is fixed!...wish I would have done this a month ago when it first started not reading disks.
