Hi,
I use DVD Shrink 3.1.7.
I have some movies to backup that contain a lot of (good) extras. Keeping all of them on the movie-DVD would mean a reduction to about 60% (of the main film). But I want a higher quality!
I already reduced the menu and extras quality to 50%.

So I got the idea to burn most of the extras on an extra Super Video CD (good enough for interviews and making of stuff). Did that successfully today with Nero Vision Express!

Now: how do I get rid of these extras on the main DVD and keep the original menu?
The best way I found out: reduce quality of these extras to "still pictures" and delete the sound. Makes 'em much smaller.
But is there a way to totally delete these extras?

P.S.: What reduction level is still good enough for you guys: 75%, 70%, 65%... ?

hi mikeeagle
yes you can delete the extras in dvd shrink, in the reauthor mode, but you cant do it and still keep the menu.
You can do it with a freeware program. called dvd stripper, but i couldnt tell you how to use it I couldnt care less about keeping the menu,so ive never used it.
Try a search for dvd stripper and see what you come up with.If you need a menu you can create your own with TMPGEnc dvd author(trial version available)author dl....http://www.pegasys-inc.com/
compression level is a matter of choice depending on too many things to list
good luck and welcome to the club

I know that other softwares like Elby CloneDVD and Intervideo Dvd Copy can do that. I've used both but I switched back to DVD Shrink. I know that in CloneDVD that you can deselect the extras, so when your on the extra menu, then you click it it will just flick the screen and not do anything. So that is the good part about that. But now I mostly just do movie only in shrink and it is really easy to customize your compression size then in other programs. The onyl thing I would really want the menu for is the intro into the menu or the scene selection screen. But its not that bad not having them.

Depending on the DVD, I use either VobBlanker or DVD Stripper (or a combination of both) to remove extras I don't want. I like having scene selection and audio/subtitle selection menus so if I can keep them without compressing the movie I always do. I also keep them if I'm going to have to compress a little anyway since they don't take up that much space, although sometimes it gets a little complicated figuring out what you have to keep for everything to work correctly without editing IFO files (which I hate doing).

DVD Stripper is particularly useful since you can also split a DVD-9 to multiple discs, keeping functional menus on both. That's the method I use for particularly long movies or some that have extras that are really good.

Since I don't use Shrink to compress anything besides menus, I can't really help you with how much is acceptable, but with DVD Rebuilder and CCE Basic I find that it depends on the movie. I can compress some movies as low as 50% of their original size with little visible difference, although that also depends on the viewing equipment. In general I try to keep them at least 75% of their original size, but that looks much better than it would using Shrink with the same amount of compression.

Hi mikeeagle,

The easy way: Nero Recode 2 (shipped with Nero 6). Select "copy entire DVD" or something. You cannot re-author in that mode but you can disable some titles. The menu will be kept on the DVD.

Notice there is no ripper in Recode. So you'll have to rip the DVD first, with DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper (both free).

Cheers,

Titlesetblanker (freeware) you can get it here (sometimes!!) but the link appears to be down at the moment !!

Vobblanker (freeware) you can get it here :-

http://www.posunplugged.com/jsoto/

and if you need a guide you can find it here:-

The guide is NOT that great! It leaves out the "strip" feature, which allows you to simply remove unwanted soundtracks from the original DVD. Just click the button "strip", it's very straightforward.

I would, personally, brace yourself for a serious arse thrashing from Vurbal. But if more people used the search facility & just did a little more research we would all be far better off. Well perhaps not, people may not post questions anymore!! and then where would we all be ? probably down the boozer i suppose!!

hey brian
I agree with you on the search function thing,we'd have to find something else to do (yahoo chat perhaps? omg the horror)lol
Im only calling it like I see it.Not all newbies can digest all of that without a little guidance.
More people need to take the time to help on here(like you just did) rather than just post.

jim_dandy: Since you seem to have all the time in the world to spend talking out of your ass about other people perhaps you could have spent a little bit of it helping him yourself. The search function doesn't just work for newbies you know, and you could have found the links to post for him. Since the most useful thing you've added to this discussion was
Quote:
Try a search for dvd stripper and see what you come up with.
you might want to take a stroll outside your glass house and take some of your own advice.

As for me, I have a wife who just got home yesterday from having a kidney stone removed, 3 kids who need to eat, take baths, and do their homework, a house that doesn't clean itself, and my job that I do from home that I have to get done. Given the fact that a lot of people aren't interested in using multiple programs that can be a little intimidating to learn I don't usually post more than a basic description until I find out if I'd be wasting my time with more details. If mikeeagle wants more information on any of this I'm more than happy to answer any questions I can, but I don't go into great detail until I find out more about what somebody knows and is interested in trying.

Looking back at my post, the only thing I would have added is that CCE Basic costs $58, but since he hasn't expressed any interest in anything besides Shrink up to this point, I don't know that he's missing out by not having that information. I don't have the links you mentioned saved for quick access and I didn't have the time to look for them right then.

mikeeagle: As I mentioned, it can be a complicated process (it's not always), but if you have the time to spend learning a little (don't worry it's easier after you do it a couple of times) of the "bullshit" I posted earlier, just let me know and I'll answer any questions I can. I imagine brian100 can probably answer DVD Stripper questions a little better than I could since I know he's used the program longer than I have.

I've personally had great success picking out bits and pieces of movies with DVD Shrink. If you mess with the menu then it won't be active but rather play as a slideshow.

However as I like my compression rate to be 70% at its lowest, If a whole dvd is under that I usually do is go through each file and view and assess whether I want to keep it or not. For example I always keep the music videos (unless they are really bad artists lol) cause the kids and I like to watch them. Sometimes there is a particular interview or feature that I might want to keep too - i.e. I'm quite interested in the real "Chopper" so I kept quite a bit of his personal interview.

This is what I do after I have used DVD Decrypter to copy the files onto my HD:

1) Start up DVD Shrink. Select Open Files and chose the relevent movie file.
2) Once Shrink has done the preliminary analysing and loaded all the parts of the movie, I select the Re-Author button. This gives you a list on the right of the movies files and a box on the left to put your selections into.
3) I then click on each of the files and press the play button to view them in the preview (ususally including the menus) to see what I want to keep and what can be trashed.
4) Once I have decided I must have, what is a maybe and what can go I right click on the files I want to keep and choose add. That file is then carried over to the dvd structure side. I copy over all the must haves first and then check the compression rate. If I have room I'll then add the maybes
5) You can use the two up and down arrow buttons to change the order of the files - for example if there is a particularly good music video or splash screen then I often have that play before the main movie.
6) Once I am happy with the make-up I hit the back-up button and either copy as an iso or as files to HD to be burnt to disc later.
7) You can also shorten and lengthen the individual files - using the start/end frames icon next to the up and down arrows. I have used this where I want the splash or animation from the menu but don't want the actual click on menu page knowing that it will be inactive.

I hope that helps someone.....DVD Shrink isn't all that hard to use if you are prepared to fiddle with it a bit and try all the features out. And you can copy any testing to your HD to see how it goes without wasting a disc.

Thanks a lot to all!

I see, I have to use and learn some new programs. I have Any DVD and Clone DVD 2, but haven't used them yet. DVD Stripper sounds interesting, too.

As I already said, using "still pictures" in DVD Shrink is a fine way to reduce the size of unwanted extras dramatically. Works with me.

Since I have an older PC (P3-450) I only want to use "fast" programs like DVD Shrink. I think Nero Vision Express (Nero Recode) is kinda slow on my PC. For the SVCD (with a nice menu and menu-music) it took more than 5 hours. So I can't do a DVD with it.
I will try TMPGEnc dvd author instead.

Let's see what others do...

Another vote for DVD Stripper! Not a huge learning curve and well worth the effort. You'll need DVD Decrypter and IFOEdit to run it. I also found that I had to run the VBR Runtime patch to get it working properly. Follow the links given above and you'll be off to a good start.

Hi,
I was doing well with DVDShrink+Nero or DVDShrink+DVDDecrypter but having a strange problem both ways. The media is not a problem either because I get the same problem with Verbatim and Ritek both. This is what is happening..In DVDShrink, if I choose the entire source disk (no "re-author"), I never get this problem. But if I click on "re-author", then drag the "main movie" from the right-side to the left-side (and do not select any "extras", to keep the compression >70% or so) and burn..it burns ok without any error..then I get the strange problem..the output disk plays well for the FIRST time on my laptop but when I exit and try to play again, it opens up the WinDVD screen but stalls and nothing happens thereafter.... This happened at least 6-7 times during the last 2 days...Did you have this problem..any suggestions...thanks.

Well im thinking whether or not you have 5.1, can i just use the 5.1 on all my burns and will it work even without having a 5.1 system? Or should i burn a 2channel dvd and then burn the same with 5.1...

In reauthor you can keep anything that you want (except the menus wont work quite right), Yes you can keep both of the audiio options.

As a rule, newer components are backward compatable. A component that will play 5.1 should be able to play a 2 channel sound file. You would not get all the benefits of the enhanced sound tho. Consider backing up both on the disc. The size of the 2 channel file is usually small enough that it will have minimal effect on the video file. That way you can pretty much be assured that it will play on the old DVD unit & the newer one.

If you are only interested in the movie, just re-author it to contain only the video & audio files you want. To heck with everything else.

Correct, if you keep the 5.1 you will still be able to hear it fine on an older system.
