My cousin sent me this PSP Slim (2001) to unbrick that's been laying around for at least a year. The nature of the brick is from doing an update while on WiFi and battery, so of course something went wrong like the warnings will tell you. I'm a complete noob at game consoles but I have experience modding mobile phones so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I was sent a pandora battery and a 4gb memory card. I used the total newb program to format and copy the files to the memory card since the manual guides always produced an error on windows 7.

I first tried loading the universal unbricker onto the memory card, then the specific one for the Slim after I didn't have any luck.

I insert the memory card, and then the battery and the device turns on and the green power light comes on also, but nothing else. Every video and guide I see just shows inserting the battery and it reads the memory card and the menu appears on the screen. Not so for me, the memory card light never comes on and neither does the screen.

I have tried several methods I've seen around the web such as holding down the right D pad button while inserting the battery, left D pad, left top button, and I also tried a method where after I insert the battery I press down on the entire D pad twice with a short gap in between, and the same with the X button. No magic happening with that either :(

If there are any more cents to be given, please share them! I appreciate any input.

Thanks!

try this mms maker, i am not sure how you are going to do it without a psp but try using this one, and when you insert the pandora you have to hold the left trigger button down, it could take up to 5 seconds before it starts to read the mms.

oh by the way, you have to check the date code under the battery to make sure its not a 88v3 mother board. if it is you may be screwed.

Get a smaller Memory Stick. Anything above 2gb is very likely not to work.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

I thought this might be the case, 4gb seemed a bit extreme for something that can't even read it's own memory after all! Also I was concerned about the motherboard version too but I wasn't sure what to look for. I had read that some newer motherboards won't allow these workarounds so that's my reasoning for saying it's been sitting around for quite a while

if you can tell us the date code and or the serial number we can give you a good idea if that is causing problems.

The serial number is an HU0, I wish I knew the specific date code :/ It also says IC: 409B-PSP2001 if that helps.

I also just tried the Rains MMS generator using the firmware provided on the link given in this thread and I got an error that says "The IPL Failed to Inject. Not enough reserved sector space for IPL. This could be due to a problem with the memory stick..." I had selected the format option before clicking "Make MMS." The readme says some Sony brand memory cards won't allow the ipl injection, I looked at the card and sure enough it's a Sony. Hopefully this is the problem, it recommends sandisk in the readme so tomorrow I'll try to find one 1gb or under and hope that it works!

I created an MMS out of a 2gb sandisk memorystick and that was successful, but still when I hold down the top left button and insert the pandora battery, only the green light comes on. However, when I use the Rainn mms maker, the light only comes on for about 5 seconds and then shuts off. So this tells me the memory stick is affecting something.

Do you think 2gb may still be too large and a 256mb would be more appropriate?

Is there anything else that could be wrong with the psp that would be causing this problem, other than it being bricked from an update?

i was just wondering when you put the regular battery in does the green light come on and stay on, if so try to turn up the volume all the way and restart it, see if you hear the sony logo chime or any other ticks when you move the d pad. if you hear sound the back light fuse could be blown. i have seen that in about 2 psp's that i have worked on. if not, i would say just keep on trying, get the smallest memory stick you can find, and put the rains on it, anything is worth a try.

With the normal battery it won't turn on at all, I havent heard one sound out of this thing at all unfortunately. It looks like 2GB is as small as I'm going to be able to find, I'm sure there's one for sale somewhere around here but who knows where. I'd like to fix this but at a point enough is enough. I read that 2GB works fine though, so that must not be the problem. Once the problem is figured out I'm sure there's a fix for it, but why is this particular unit unique? I've found some other threads where posters have similar issues, but it ends up being that they didn't do something that I already tried, or in some cases remain unresolved. I really do hope that this won't turn into one of those cases but at this moment I am quite stumped as to what else it could be.

[edit] This isn't really anything meaningful, but I found a guide to make an MMS specifically for the PSP Slim Here. This comes with an older version of the MMS Maker and it allowed me to choose which trigger button I wanted to use, thinking maybe the top left one was broken I selected other buttons to use, and none of them worked :/ The problem I am having is that with despertar del cementerio when I insert the pandora battery the green power light comes on but then shuts off about 2 seconds later, no other lights or sounds or anything. Only despertar del cementerio does this, other MMS like Newbie tool #3 that is specific to the Slim that I have created resulted in the power light staying on indefinitely, which is what also happens if I insert the pandora battery without a memorystick. I've tried DDC versions 7 and 8. I also read that switching it to hold before I insert the pandora battery may work, but not for this one!
