What's the safest option for flashed xbox 360? install the game or play from the disc?

I just flashed my 360 and just burned my 1st game at 2.4X using HP no scratch, and I already got dirty disc error and sent back to main screen.

I know install to the hard drive will save problems, but my harddrive is too small for multiple game installations.

I kinda get the same thing and I use Verbatims (most of them burned at 2.4x). Even if the game is installed to HDD you need to have the disc in the drive and the game disc will be queried every so often (probably more when you are on live) to make sure the disc is still in there, and other security checks. So I still get this error sometimes with the game installed.

Some of my games are scratched like hell. You think 'I can just make another copy' and the disc becomes a football. I am sure this is one reason I am getting the 'dirty disc' screen sometimes.

Other than that especially with recent burns at 4X (the batch I bought was Verbatim but they only support 4X, 6X, and 8X; it's probably the reason for any errors). So completely clean, I can still get the dirty disc error; the game might even install fine. I think it really really has to do with the quality of the dye for me. And my drive might be weak (or my system is getting incorrect values from the drive a lot of the time (still not banned from Live); I got this system for free though).

after much burning and trying, I reached the conclusion that if I can burn the disc successfully and verified, my drive will still fail to read it from time to time EXCEPT when I installed the burned game to the hard drive.

Man I need bigger hard drive... my 1st gen 20 gig is just not enough for more than 2 games.

Maybe you need to replace the drive mate. How old is the console?

The laser in your drive is probably failing. You could probably just buy a replacement laser instead of a whole new drive, because that would be the easiest. Getting a new drive requires obtaining the dvd key from the system, which isn't for the faint of heart.

That, and use Verbatim, burn at 2.4x ONLY!
