article published on 26 February, 2010

On Thursday, AMD revealed the new ATI Radeon HD 5830 graphics card, promising to supply gamers with cutting-edge features and performance from its "award winning" Radeon HD 5800 series. The company was quick to mention that the 5830 debuts with a price tag of less than $250 in its press release. the 5830 is low end if my ati numbering scheme is correct, i guess if you waited long enough to update even a low in card will put your old high end to shame.

They're unveiling the new GF100 products at PAX.

It's a gutted Cypress chip that had malfunctions/imperfections in the fab process. These are the 5870 rejects with too many defects to even be scaled down to 5850 status.

They've had these chips since the production of the 5870 and 5850, but didn't know what to do with them and didn't have enough of them at the time of the 5870/5850 release.

They fill the gap that ATi was looking to fill, though. It performs about mid way between a 5770 and 5850 with a price to match.

honestly what's the point when any software that will make ANY USE at all of dx11 and other M$ crap will be stuffed so full of drm the sensible people will refuse to have anything to do with it?

My old 9250 will run films at 1600x1400 50Hz ..who needs more than that?

Yikes! My 7-8yo Linux box has a 9200 and it's fine for its uses (I have Windows on that box too, but for some reason the video drivers freak out...whether 2000, XP or Win7). It's the last ATI-based card I ever got due to horrid experiences w/ their tech support (maybe they're better under AMD???). My main computers have nVidia 8600GT(S) cards, though, which are quite acceptable.

i usually buy lastgen high end cards, as there almost as cheap as the new low/mid range cards and more powerful than the new mid range not by much.
