Is it still possible/safe to use an official 8955 update on a 8955 jtagged system in order to get user avatars working again ? I really don't want to mess up this box, but I'd also like to get avatars working again...

No, its not safe, the official update contains the fix for the jtag exploit. Do not update.
Thanks! Because here and there I read that if you're already on 8955 (albeit an XBReboot version), you can use the official update to get avatars working properly again. The update would recognize that it's already at 8955 and thus would only install the avatar update - but I'm reluctant to try that out :)
Yes, based on information I found here and there on the 'net, I decided to take the plunge and installed the official 8955 update on an 8955 XBR box. I've put the update on a DVD and booted the system with it, and after (reluctantly) pressing 'Yes' it updated. Everything worked out fine, and the previously unusable parts of the Dashboard (Avatars) now work fine.
I did understand you should NOT attempt this with a big block Jasper board (256MB) prior to erasing the MU..!
